Imagine that in a Sport Defender!

Dude, “Apparently”? What does that mean? Based on what? ...Do you mean, in your opinion? Or is this just another premature wishful statement?

Word in the automotive press street Won’t be retro...

Various quotes from new defender articles, some posted on here already.

"7,000rpm on the rev-counter – indicating that the Defender will be offered with a high-revving petrol engine."

"All its models post 2020 will be electrified in some way, we expect that each powertrain will feature at least a 48-volt mild-hybrid system."
The 6pot ingenium petrol fits the mild- hybrid 48 volt scenario.

"Jaguar Land Rover insists the Defender will need a "balanced engine portfolio" in order to succeed in all global markets."

V6 petrol from ford contract ending so in order to have a balanced engine portfolio the straight six would have to be included as petrol seems to be gaining favour over diesel.

"The garden-variety Defender family is set to employ a variety of drivetrains extending from mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants paired with JLR’s existing four-cylinder petrol engines, through to full electric variants.

Further up the food chain, Land Rover will offer a choice of its new straight-six Ingenium engines in varying tunes."

Land Rover to launch new Defender "family" - motoring.com.au

"According to Car magazine, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines commonly used through the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) range will be available on the new Defender. New 3.0-litre straight-six engines should also be available on more powerful models. "

"According to Autocar, the new Ingenium straight-six will feature an electrically powered turbocharger, giving it enough power to properly replace the aging 5.0-liter V8 in future Land Rover and Jaguar products. Less powerful versions of the engine will also replace the automaker’s 3.0-liter V6 going forward."

Also it stands to reason that Land Rover would not make a new balanced, powerful, efficient and desirable engine and not put it in the new Defender, it will also be available and real world public tested in the RRS HST by before Defender.

I agree with the words of 4x4 Australia:

"A new Defender SVX powered by a grunty straight-six? Yes please!"

I reckon JLR will go bankrupt before the new defender comes out, even if it does it will never save them from their losses.
4 billion US dollar loss last quarter, they will never make that back.

Same thoughts crossed my mind . Very much doubt there will be a Defender.

The China market is not going to come back unless they introduce 100% BEV models yesterday.

China pays $6000 - $10,000 EV subsidies per car. As well as unrestricted licensing.

"In any given month, as many as three million applications might be received for the 3,000 available new vehicle licenses, with the remainder going into a lottery pool. Buyers of EVs, however, are exempt from this process and assured of receiving a license."

Reintroducing the 4BD1 would appeal to a large part of the market and those looking for an awesome retro Defender. [Bigsmile]

Good time to invest in JLR/Tata imo, knowing what we know.

They are in the middle of a massive turnaround strategy.

Jaguar Land Rover Loses PS3.4 Billion in Q4 2018 | WardsAuto

Its not a loss from lack of sales so much, its mainly an asset writedown etc. 3.1b pounds (273m)quarterly loss.

JLR over the last few years have invested heavily in new technology and new facilities around the world, new engine facilities new battery facilities, new electric motor facilities + new plants like Slovakia etc.

JLR are currently also in the midst of a massive cost-saving exercise 2.5bil + axing 6000 jobs in total since 2018.

Moving forward one of the markets that JLR are banking on with defender is looking strong with a big increase in sales since last year and the UK isn't far behind.
Even so sales overall we're down because of the massive reduction in sales from China.

Jaguar Land Rover Loses PS3.4 Billion in Q4 2018 | WardsAuto

They are currently raising 1bil and have a 1.5bil credit redundancy they haven't touched.

With the new redesigned smaller suvs selling very well and other full size SUVs with hybrid options coming on board now + defender release i can see the next 2 years ahead in sales will be very impressive for JLR.

"When Tata acquired JLR from Ford in 2008 it was close to bankruptcy. Since then sales have tripled, to over 600,000 cars a year in 2017. Profits have rolled in.

Ralf Speth, a former BMW executive hired to lead JLR on a route to catch its German rivals, may in recent years have gone too far, too fast. He pushed to sell 1m cars a year to help spread the costs of developing future technology.

Tata, nevertheless, remains committed to the management that turned JLR from near bankruptcy to become the world’s fourth-largest luxury car brand. It plans to cut costs by £2.5bn over the next 18 months and will axe 4,500 jobs (around a tenth of the workforce) on top of 1,500 job losses announced in 2018. That should turn its cashflow positive by 2020-21, according to Tata.

The Indian group’s judgment that JLR is a good business that will recover, seems sound. Tata may have washed its hands of Corus, another ailing British acquisition, putting the steelmaker into a joint venture with ThyssenKrupp of Germany last year, but it sees JLR as an important bet on new technology and thus the future. Jaguar may need to rethink what sort of cars it makes but Range Rover is among the most profitable brands in the business and updated models arriving in the next few years will give the firm a boost. If it can get through the next year, then concentrate on expensive SUVs, JLR should get back on track."

Jaguar Land Rover is in a hole mostly of its own making - Tata to the rescue

I can see them returning to profit within one to two years considering the asset write down was a one-time correction event, the massive investment in facilities is mostly in place and recent + future releases look to be very lucrative for JLR.
