I agree with Goingbush. I won’t be buying one if it’s a lifestyle SUV. I wouldn’t have bought either of my current Defenders if they were lifestyle SUV’s either. They simply wouldn’t cope with what I use them for year after year.

Good point, however as said previously I don't think JLR have ever claimed new defender will be a working 4x4, however a 130 dual cab version would be a dam nice package to work out of and travel long distances in, just depends on type of work and suitability I guess are you carrying hay every now and then or fixing big rigs? Same as should i buy a merc ute xclass tub or a 79 series trayback, different cars for different needs. Everyone's got different needs which has to be respected.

Actually, you might be surprised to learn that this is a reality already for the latest LR vehicles. It's called Software Over The Air or SOTA. Cars fitted with a SIM can do this directly or I think those with wifi can be connected via a hotspot.

This allows for updates to Maps, telemetrics, infotainment software etc. Not sure if this would be or is already extended to other ECUs in the vehicle. The benefits are obvious.

Makers like BMW do this as well. They actually have an "app store" where you can purchase add ons to enable additional features.

Tesla is another one that does this.

Yep saw those sim slots in some of the 2019s recently. Extra sims on mobile plans are pretty cheap, another benefit is they can run wifi dash cams etc, i run one off a usb powered wifi hotspot in the RRC. Can check footage live on the mobile.

Except JLR don’t appear to be respecting anyone’s needs except the luxury urban SUV market. Correct, they’ve never claimed the new Defender will be a working 4x4. As such it is no longer a Defender IMO, because the very definition of Defender has always been as a utilitarian work vehicle. That is the problem.

See where your coming from, but compare a 60series and a 200 series, or an early Gwagon and 2019 one, slow changes over the years no-one seems to care big changes all at once and its the end of the world. By your own words many times not much has been released etc, JLR doesn't claim that the new defender is something and its already not a Defender?
Did you see the leaked interior images? Pretty utilitarian from where I'm sitting, under looks pretty tough too, looks boxy as, good for load with rear seats down. My take it will have a utilitarian version, as they are im record as such, however until all the body styles are released ill reserve judgement on its suitability for work and what type of work.

If they didnt care about real 4x4s (not suv) capability, they wouldnt go to so much effort (see evoque and RRS testing vids above) to ensure they can go anywhere as reliably as reasonably possible, usually best in class cabability, and they wouldn't have resurrected the defender.

Old series landrovers i agree, however I'm sure many buyers of the defender especially the puma didn't buy it as s utilitarian work vehicle, more for touring/overlanding as it got more long distance/family suitable, i see that trend continuing, as the new defender will be a true dual purpose vehicle, Best 4x4 and able to do Everything else.

Discovery is Land Rovers’ 200 Series equivalent, not Defender.
