So, the "Satin" option is actually a factory wrap to protect the paint. Fascinating.

That box and the ladder is a really stupid idea - more look than function for any vehicle being used in a forest or heavy bush - with my RRS the external rear vision mirror glass is glued in as they have been knocked out so many times hitting trees etc.

With these options on the Defender I can see I lot of damage being done to the ladder and box and the car itself. Looks good when dropping off the kids at school though .

The list of options is insane but doesn't surprise me. I assumed that LR was going to go for broke with this vehicle. In a way that can cater for the techie brigade. They have certainly done that. Hopefully they will.do.a version with 18's, bigger diesel, and air suspension with terrain control and easy care interior but with no other bling. That should satisfy a few people if you can get past it's super soft look.

Id use the box. we do alot of beach driving so it would be great for the wetsuit, sandy towels and all those other things i usually put in a spare tyre bag. No issues with side mounted for me at all except wind noise. Your mirror or snorkel will hit way before the ladder. I dont think i have hit those on any of my snowy mountain trips either. Did wipe off a kayak on a low branch once but we won't go there.. If the box is an easy on /off then id also keep my fishing gear in one and just mount it for that trip etc

Many 4x4s have side mounted ladders with no dramas, infact my old mans 60series had one(alloy extended right down to chassis), was used all the time, never got hit enough to bend, LRs design is smart, folds up and in, your flares and mirrors would hit first imo.

Current defender many people run spare fuel, sand tracks, etc etc in the storage spot and you don't hear about them being knocked off all the time.

Imo Defenders lend themselves 2 storing stuff up there due to the unique hipline the bulges out.

I reckon the ladder is fantastic, very innovative on Land Rovers part.. I would use it all the time.

The storage box will take a while to get used to but for me it would have my boots snatch strap, shackles gloves and air compressor hose etc, I'm guessing it's made out of flexible ABS like the old defender flares, so would probably be able to take a bit of a hit, and pop back out like a suitcase.. just guessing.

I'm not convinced that the box is even legal in Australia - the law permits roof-carried loads to be wider than the roof line but that's for temporary loads, not a permanent fixture on the side of the vehicle. With the exception of the Perenties (and which technically probably isn't legal in any case) I can't think of any other vehicle on the Australian market that tries to load stuff on the side of the vehicle.
