    > The new Defender will, “transition from a specialist 4x4 to a luxury SUV,” says Nick Rodgers, the project’s chief engineer. “We can’t be held back by our heritage.”

If that's their standpoint they should have called it the 'Attacker' . Out of respect for the heritage I shall forever more call it the 'Pretender'.

    > diamond plate inserts on the hood. The only reason these existed on the old Defender was so you could stand on the fenders, but according to the current design team, these inserts on the new one can’t support weight, and are therefore*only cosmetic. In other words, they’re fake

To be expected from a Pretender

Conversely- the original was known for inability to:

    Get warm
    Get cool
    Keep breeze out
    Allow conversation
    Keep water out
    Keep dust out
    Corner
Stay together - plenty of parts failing or rivets etc snapping.
    Stop quickly
    Go quickly
Park on a hill using its handbrake
Keep the occupants alive in a collision

Although you could stand on the front wings (which bend under anything over about 75kg)

This new one can tow more, carry more, support more, survive more.

So which one’s pretending to be a vehicle?
    The leaky tractor?

It’s alright to have a preference for the earlier units, but this whole childish attitude towards the modern version is ridiculous.

How many enterprises have said that to their detriment?

    Weird comment Rogers made IMHO.

Is your HD smart tv pretending to be a CRT TV?

Is your smart phone pretending to be a 1990s brick?

Is it better to be able to pay bills online or do you still prefer losing an hour to go to the post office and que up to pay a bill?

Do you take 3 months off to travel by sea to Europe or do you hop on a plane and arrive there in 24 hours?

Do you wash your clothes in a bath or are you using a washing machine?

Maybe you'd prefer you live in a cave, perhaps?

Evolution dictates progress! Yeah not every evolutionary concept works initially but it's this learning curve over time which allows one to learn and improve making the concept a success in reality.

The defender evolved very very slowly over time and whilst the world moved on at a faster pace than the defenders evolution LR evolved producing some of the world's best luxury capable 4wd vehciles. I will admit I could be wrong but I'm banking on LR marrying the best of both worlds to build a platform that will revolutionise the 4wd world. Sure it'll take time to convince the" old school" but I'm convinced this iteration of Defender will be the one that's remembered as the greatest 4wd ever built. It will do what the old one did, whilst protecting your family in comfort and style.... and keeping you dry.

Sure you can hate all you want, but as the world evolves your inability to accept change makes you... the one that's the pretender!

Talking about moving forward. IMO the luxury SUV market is saturated, it's peaked. Land Rover have a bunch of LUX SUV models already. They had it covered. The defender was different. I fear for land rovers future - putting all their eggs in one basket. The new defender does nothing more to secure their future. It just cuts into sales of their other lux suv's

The work ute is still a valid market. They could have at least kept their toe in

The Pretender is not an evolution of the Defender. It's a whole new car created for a different purpose/market.

    The New Defender

It is absolutely an evolution - without the hops that the Rangie and the Discovery went through. They held onto a dinosaur for so long it missed the intermediate changes - that’s the big shock to the world.

Defender sales in the last 10 years quite frankly - sucked! Nobody wanted them, until they heard they were going and then the Hipsters stepped up. Something unique for the High street. Now most have been onsold as they weren’t t what they expected day to day. Only those holding out on the limited models hold hope of bigger return on investment and they aren’t going to be used for purpose either - show ponies that will never have the bugs sorted as they don’t get driven.

Older owners talk of ultimately customisable yet in all the years I’ve seen maybe 3 that were modified beyond their primary design. The rest, like all others were just bolt on bits and fabricated inserts.

You’ll also find the work Ute market is saturated also.

Remember the rule of money - for somebody to have it someone else just lost it.

Vehicle market is the same, there is no part of the market not already serviced by multiple offerings. For you to choose one brand another must lose out.

An example: Farmers and Miners were the key 7x Crusier users. Now those fleets are turning into Rangers and Prados. Where do you see the future of the 7x units?

One trick ponies are gone. Now it’s trailers and comfort.

I really enjoy our current Defender; makes me smile every time I’m in it. I’ll enjoy the new one too, all the comfort of a D4 in a more utilitarian construct.
