    Options for repairing 2a chassis

    Howdy guys,

I am on the verge of buying a 2a 109inch FFR that has a good story and is reasonably all there, but my sticking point is the rust in the rear chassis crossmember, which appears quite a mess

In australia, what is the options for replacing a large section of the chassis? Are there aftermarket replacement chassis sections available like the UK, or will it require another chassis to be chopped for plates / parts?

    Cheers

Hi Ambo , Mate its a Landrover & unless the things been submerged off a beach somewhere then the chassis is redeemable (It just depends on your welding prowess) Time may also be a factor as you may have to strip the old girl to her bare bones & start from scratch. Please note that the military rear cross members are different to civvy Landies so the only place to get a replacement would be from another military vehicle.

    Thanks coolness

I seem to remember some mob selling a replacement rear crossmember in both civvy and military makes, but i cant seem to find it again.

The other problem is in VIC the penalty for getting busted with a non certified chassis repair is a tad on the steep side, so i figured if they were hear i may as well have that grafted on the ass end instead of a patch and plate

It will need a strip to bare bones anyway

I hear there are plenty of matilda tanks at the bottom of the ocean

4 Wheel drives in Blackburn keep the civvy rear crossmembers.

If you advertise in the wanted section of the forum you might get someone who has a chassis to sell or one that's damaged and the crossmember can be cut off.
Nobody seems to want a s/h chassis, I tried for a long time to get rid of a Series 1 chassis on the forum and also a galvanised SIII SWB chassis. If you are willing to collect there will be someone who can help.
I know someone with a Series III FFR chassis, he keeps telling me to collect it but it will cost a trailer hire.......

No problems Steve, I don't have a use for it at the moment, but there's always another project round the corner......

    Rear Crossmember

One option is to source a DEFENDER Crossmember. They can be modified to replicate a military cross member.

I say modified, as again, it depends upon your welding skill and abilities.

    Defender 90 110 Rear Crossmember

As you can see in the link picture the inside of the crossmember of one is different to a military S2a, but it follows the same profile.

Time, money & skill are your allies.

    Just a suggestion.
