I got a No 5 from the Melbourne auction, I noticed that the ring on the front of the trailer has a grease nipple. Does this mean it is able to turn ? what needs to be done to make it turn ?
It would be better for me if the ring was able to turn rather than going to a Nato coupling.
Any suggestions ????
If you take the 6 bolts off that hold on the lunette flange to the drawbar spline and remove the lunette assembly, you will usually find three metal washers, one or two large ones with a knotch that locks against part of the casting, assembled with two small washers first they allow the lunette to turn inserted with the large knotched one first they lock the lunette.
Remember, you shouldn't have both the pintle and the lunette rotating.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Thanks for the photo and explanation. I will pull mine apart and move the washer. Aren't they smart to build em that way !!!
It would also be wise to throw away the nylon lock nut and put a castellated nut and split pin (there is a hole for the split pin) then no worries about the nylon lock nut coming off and leaving your trailer behind, remember nylon lock nuts are a one use only nut and putting them on a second time can mean the nylon does not lock it on (most times OK but not worth the risk).
Hope that helps

You will likely find that the lunette has the castle nut. The one in the image is an amalgamation of two lunettes, a broken flange with damaged castle nut and the second with a Treg hitch instead of the lunette. The nylock came off the Treg.
The amalgamation is also likely the reason for the two knotched washers instead of only one.

I doubt too many trailers made it over to WA but here is some info for anyone wanting to licence one here :
You will need 2 white reflectors on the front corners, and amber either side and even though your lights may have some inbuilt, a red on each side of the rear.
You will need to fit chains (2 ea in case of vehicle/trailer separation) and the chain now needs to be rated (ie stamped with its rating so the inspectors can see as such).
You will need to apply online for a New VIN as undoubtably like mine your number will show up as a duplicate. Stamp this into a conspicuous place like the draw bar.
The lunette ring will need to be stamped with it's rating (lucky you had them letter punches out! ;oP )
Goes without saying that the wheel bearings and spring bushes need to be tip top!
Not sure about mud flaps, but I'll post up if I get knocked back for not having them.
Wish me luck!
OK all good bar mud flaps too short and need weigh bridge cert.
Regoed tomorrow!
Qld. Transport would not recognise Government Ordnance Factory Maribyrnong as a manufacturer in spite of probably hundreds of these trailers being civilian registered over the decades. I took photos of the ID plate with clear numbers and of other details with me when I started the registration procedure. Waste of time. Trailer is registered as "home made".
