Peterborough & Terowie, two very big Rail Yards in SA alas now both gone since the AN main line bypassed them.

Terowie noted for General MacArthur's "I will return speech" after he stepped off the train onto the platform during WW2, also the Change of Rail Gauge to the East,West & North of OZ where freight had to be manually transferred across the platforms.

ie. SAR to Commonwealth Railways rolling Stock.

We've been to Terowie a few times, not much left there now, except a very long platform, upon which is located a plaque at the spot where MacArthur stood. Like I said, not much left there now, but ya can see that in its day, it must have been absolutely HUGE.

Yep it was big & very busy, with Coal Gantries etc & even had a rail Tippler (mainly for the coal stock that emptied into the base of the gantry) to empty the contents. Ther are/were some good images on Google a while ago of the whole joint.


My Dad (WO2) was attached to the big Army Transit Camp as a driving Instructor & MV Maint to the north of the yards, now the oval precinct I think. I spent some time there playing around the infrastructure & was "mates" with the Stationmaster's Son, Rex..

The Military Cells were still there a few years ago although looked a bit sad then, down near the Railway line, so handy for the Provosts (MPs) I suppose they were used for the "unruly" troops on the incoming troop trains heading North..

I have happy memories of my stay there.
