AFAIK often a MAF fault will not show as an error or in some cars show as a O2 sensor error as the mixture becomes rich on "limp home".Quote:
Will a dirty MAF sensor show up as a fault? I do have a code reader for the ECM... Ill clean none the less though. Being a GEMS, and a different type of sensor to the one shown in Pauls MAF cleaning page, any tips on the clean?
Philip is your chip tuned for power or economy? I think i found the place with some googling that still does the Unichip tuning.
I have never really taken notice of the GEMS sensor but if it is a "film" sensor , you spray both sides orf the bottom of the "blade"with electronics cleaner. The Bosch film sensors are reputed to be shorter lasting than the earlier wire ones but you can buy just the sensor part which is cheaper .
Tuned for power or economy? That is a good question. I asked for attention to be paid to the cruise timing , but do not think they spent much time. Most tuners of 14CUX will take fuel out on cruise so that part is economy( however I have since fitted o2 sensors which always run lambda at cruise). E.G recently I added 3 degrees timing to mine and had an excellent result in power but I do not know yet about economy or whether I will get detonation.
For GEMS it is a bit more complicted as GEMS is a sophisticated system with timing control and knock sensors. Usually the tuners add timing which usually increases both power and economy as the low comp engines were tuned for "Rest of World" and 89 octane AFAIK and I have heard have quite a safety margin before detonation. On these systems basically what the tune does is reduce safety margins.
Graeme Cooper told me several years ago that the gains on GEMS were not great with a Unichip as GEMS is an advanced system which is not far from optimal.
Anyway you should find out the difference when you drive it this weekend.
