Dead P38A, only key in ignition, doors locked

Wife drove it to work, left the lights on all day, result...flat battery.
I drove over in the '93 with the jumper leads to sort it out.

Upped the 93 hood, popped the key in the ignition ready to start then did same on P38A opened the drivers door with the only key, put key in ignition ready to start and upped the hood. Connected jumper leads, neg to engine, pos to pos battery then did other end to the 93 battery neg jumper to battery neg and as soon as I put pos jumper to battery pos the doors on the P38A locked up. I sat down and played with Maggie, our Border Collie for a few minutes then we all got back in the 93 and came home.

Question is how do I break into our dead P38A whilst inflicting the least amount of damage?? I don't want to hurt her, after all its not her fault she was designed by those pigheaded morons at Landrover. Why in gods name don't ALL the lights go off with the ignition.

ps. Yes, as soon as I get my hands on that key its off to get a couple of copies made.

Ouch! Guess you have now learned the hard way to always leave a door or window open before touching the battery terminals. No need for any of us to rub it in though, you are in enough pain and I feel for you.

Driver or passenger window is relatively easy to replace as it is just a matter of removing the inner door panel, lowering the window (or what is left), popping the clips and putting a new one in.

It is just the mess of a broken window on the interior that will haunt you for years to come.

If you can't find a replacement window locally, pm "Andrew E" as he should have some spares in Sydney.

    Cheers, Paul.

A sheet of clear contact stuck over the glass helps to keep most of it in place when you whack it.

And limit the whacker to something like a mini cricket or baseball bat, tends to spread the pressure point and not blow straight thru it.

If you have a sun roof that is usually the easiest way in

I would be trying a coat hanger first, before breaking any window.

I also recall this happening to another member on here during her outback trip. She was able to remove the small fixed triangle window on the back door without breaking it. Sounds tricky.

Where is the car now ??

Yes, easiest way, it's only held in by the rubber seal.
If it's deadlocked though, you may need to get in via the front though.

If the car is in a safe spot though, you can order a new key blade through LR. About $20 & a week to come from UK in my experience.

This is another timely reminder for everyone to get a second key sorted. I am running the gauntlet on only one also at the moment.

Does anyone know where I can a blank metal spare cut? Certainly Bunnings and the local show repair man cant cut them so who can?

Any big locksmith will have the machine.
I recall having a BMW key cut at Pittwater Locksmiths and the machine even spat out the code of the key put in as a guide.
Car dealers always go to a locksmith as I found out when I wanted a new Honda key coded by the dealer.
