I had hoped that it was nothing more than a badly worn or collapsed tapped/rocker. My service provider tested it and advised me that I was out of luck, and that because the tap tap noise went away when cold but came back when hot, he suspected a liner was loose. He checked the tappets to be sure and could not find a noisy one.

Thank you, I'd be interested to learn who prepared your engine and what stuff went into it - pistons, rods, heads, cams etc.

Mine was build by Bruce Davis.
Controlled by Haltech and fitted with a D2 manifold ;-)

mine does the same has done sinse i have had it.some other[cheaper]things it could be are loose manifold, hyd lifters, tappets which you have already checked, cam chain worn and hitting on something.I believe that if you pull the heads off you can see if the liner has been hitting. If you do a search on here it will tell you.or of course it could have a slipped liner

well the 5.0L is a lot of fun, i have the trs 5.0L in mine. cooling is a big issue the std system doesnt work also the 4.0L management cant handle it.
next on the to do list, heat exchangers instead of the trans and eng oil coolers, custom all alloy rad, new higher air flow air con condenser/evaporator the one at the front always get them confused, pigy back ecu and new exhaust. started with a $10k budget but the time it was in and running cost the best part of $15k and still all this to do before its really usable. its been parked in the shed for the last 6 months, ill eventually get it going again. if you have the coin and the time do it otherwise id suggest going with a std high comp 4.6 with non slip liners a towing cam and some opened up heads, it will be a whole lot lees hassle and a heap cheaper.
    good luck

thanks for the insight; I agree that a 'worked' 4.6 makes better sense on many levels, but every time I close my eyes I hear a deeper 5.0L burble . . . .

If I decide to go 4.6 I think I would go with a Turners engine, I really like the no compromise engineering attitude that their website reflects which is supported by their response to my questions thus far.

They don't do a 5.0L, so that leaves me a choice between local companies. If you don't mind replying to the question, it will be helpful to learn why you chose TRS?

Is there a difference between the 4.0L radiator and the 4.6L? My radiator (4.6) was recored about 2 years ago, are you suggesting that it will struggle with the extra heat?

    Thanks
    Syd

That's why I'm hoping to sort an ls1 and auto for around 15k drive in/out

Dollars, you still need to build the short with top hat liners, then blower, then tuning, they do help, but an eaton M90 is undersize for the job, really need to use a 112

I'm also planning on supercharging the LS1 I put in my P38......but that, not be in the 15k price
