    Remote key fob replacement

The Bro has a 1998 P38a HSE with a Davis 5 litre engine that I now have the use of, forever if I wish !!
I have purchased and fitted EAS stuff from Hardrange that works well.
Sorry to hear that you Blokes have folded.

Anyway the problem is that we only now have one remote key fob. This one has been soldered and bodgied up to keep it working. Have been told that when the battery goes flat again it will fall apart and car will be immobilised. A new key fob if one could be found will not work as in this car the thing could not be coded or some flamin thing. I dont use the fob but lock up with the key.
Th only fix apparentley is a new kit from Germany that contains two new fobs, barrel and the replacement locking system for all 4 doors ? Havent got a price yet.
    Does this sound right ?

I live in fear that the fob thingy will **** itself and the car disabled. I think we are only holding on by the skin of our teeth.

    Ta.

If I cant get two new key fobs and have that peace of mind I will park the thing.
If all goes well we shall carry on.
The vehicle rides nicely but seems to wallow and roll around a bit. I suspect that the air bags are nearing their use by date and the shockies as well. Can these bags, over time become soft or a little spongy ?
I have not gone thru all the service paperwork yet but looking underneith, one bag looks newer than the others, which seem to have some hairline cracking. If I decide to carry on I shall replace all the bags with new OEM's.
Not interested in extra height and stuff that Gen 3's offer.
The shockies look as tho they are still the original, now what could I replace them with that will handle corrigations and a bit of outback travel ?

new key fobs can only be obtained from the LR factory in the UK. Provided you are completely certain that the doorlocks are original then by supplying the VIN etc you can get a new programmed fob to suit the BECM/door lock. So far so good... the bad news is that most LR dealers charge between $600-700 whereas the UK LR dealers charge less than "150 quid" ...less than half the locals...

I ended up getting mine through my daughter who currently lives in the UK and she posted it to me... but LR (UK) supplied the wrong one!!! Took another 6 weeks, a detailed photo of original and one supplied for them (LR UK) to admit their error and provide daughter with the correct fob and key.
(turns out they put the wrong key into the envelope...so someone else out there also has a dud fob and key...)

Local dealers I contacted will not enter into any "correspondence" even if sent the wrong key... you pay up front and "hope" you get the correct key and fob. If so, all you do is insert the key in the door lock, press the button while you turn the key and it syncs with the BECM. I am reliably informed of one service manager at a well known LR dealership who tried to charge $100 to sync the key

Suggestion: If you have a reliable friend in the UK, email them a scan of your rego certificate with the VIN Number plus a scan of your licence. Also send a clear photo of the key blade (both sides). I'm assuming that the door lock is the original one fitted to the vehicle...state this clearly. Ask them to arrange a new one from their local dealer. Because it is to be exported there should be no VAT payable. UK first class mail to Aus in a small padded jiffy bag costs about A$5 and takes less than a week!

    cheers

EDIT: airbags don't lose their effectivenss unless they leak. Small surface cracks are not unusual. Best shocks are original Boges ...they're not gassed like Bilsteins or Konis... and they complement the airbags very well. More than suitable for corrugations (did the PRD to Weipa a couple of years ago... all good)

    Thanks Hoges.
I am not sure if the locks and stuff are original.
Graeme at Landrover Spares has told me that getting a new fob as you suggest will not work because it will not sync ?? He can get these fobs that you mention. I asked him to relace the battery in the one we have but he went white and said, dont fiddle with it and prey.
    Way over my head.
But if there is a German kit available, I would be happy to get it, as a complete new system should outlive me or the Bro !!!
    I shall keep looking.

    Thats interesting Rupert.
Does that mean that the remotes are only used to turn on the computer and activate the alarm systems as well as unlocking the doors ?
Is that all the remote does, is it used for no other purpase anywhere else ?

How would a Bloke disable the remotes. Do you need access to Faultmate or Nanacom etc.

Being from another planet, I would sooner not have anything to do with remotes and all this new fangled nonsence. Central locking, electric windows, electric bloody mirrors that keep pointing at the ground etc, electric seat operation, unreliable EAS, I have the bypass kit and the little thingy that clears faults etc:. Other than that, the P38 is nice with its auto and cruise control.
I wish me D1 had it.

mirror dip is disabled by selecting reverse and holding the memory button in on the seat until the message display says "mirror dip off"
use of the remotes depends on year model and market programing. if you can lock your car with the remote but disarm it with one turn of the key in the door, then get a normal key cut (bmw or merc) and use that but keep the remote hidden in the car for emergencies the alarm reciever under the rh rear parcel shelf can be disconnected, because the drivers door latch gets so much use it should be renewed.
on models where the alarm cannot be disabled from the drivers door or still has its auto relock feature then the Becm needs to have its market programing changed (there are a few of us able to this).
once the vehicle is set up like this it is simple to hook up an after market remote set to the car, just for door opening.
    PS
it is also fairly simple to hook up an LED to warn of remote RF interference when parking etc and to show the remote is working corectly.

    Thanks Rupert.
The fob that we are using at the moment works fine but we have been told that once the battery goes flat the thing will self destruct if tampered with.
We were told this by the experienced Bloke that was able to bodgy it together in the first place.
So my concern is what to do about it before that happens.

I like the idea of disabling the thing altogether but I dont know what else the fob does besides opening the doors ? Does it work and control stuff in other areas ? If the fob could be thrown up the back paddock and just use a key as I have done from day one, I would be delighted.

I like the idea of that German kit that I mentioned with the two fobs and new door locks etc. The thing is fifteen years old now and the idea of renewing these hard worked bits sounds like a good idea but I cant seem to find any infomation on this kit.

Lot to learn about these things, early days yet but I am not convinced that I shouldn't just park the thing up the paddock and throw this fob thingy even further away !!!
I begin to suspect that the Bro doesn't like me.

    Thanks.

    Robert.

PS: Never had to have bypass kits on leaf springs either.
