Thread: P38 4.6 maximum safe operating temperature

Having just upgraded my cooling system, post to come soon, my research came up with the following temps in C and F

Thermostat fully open: 96 or 205

Normal; 93 or 200

hard running; 98 or 210

AC Fans on for overheat situation; 107 or 225

My system currently sits around 92.3 according to the nanocom

interesting mine sits around 87C normal driving. This temp was measured by a watchdog temp sensor, the sensor is bolted to the front manifold, im thinking may be a few degrees cooler in that location, so I might add 5c to that figure. I have with the watchdog a relay that will automatically turn the thermo fans on, and I've set it earlier at 95c, i might increase that to 100c.
I wondering the oh X^%$ I've done damage temp is. Just wanting to have a temp in mind that if reached i will shut down to cool off.

after having about 2 years of random overheating issues attributed to all sorts of things I ended up with a probe on the input of the radiator and it would sit in the mid 90's for average driving and get upto about 110 for sitting in traffic stationery in hot 35c plus weather.

I had the light set to come on at 110, and the alarm set to go off at 114.

114 for my car basically equaled hitting the red on the gauge, but the speedo light still hadn't come on - I never got that far.

The few places I dealt with (had block hardness tested etc) all seemed to agree that if the factory warning light comes on then its probably too late, let alone if you notice the light.

Mine runs at 87-89 all the time on the highway. Around town on a +40 day it may get up to 97 in the underground carpark.

I'm probably being over protective, but whilst I had an overheating problem I would switch it off at 100.

Thanks Steve for the condensor fans temp. Personally I think that is way to high....sigh... another think to sort out - already got 7 things on the go.

im not familiar with the nanocom, what is the 98 degree default temp reference to?

From RAVE:


The thermostat is closed at temperatures below approximately 80degsC. When the coolant temperature reaches between 80 to 84

°C the thermostat starts to open and is fully open at approximately 96

°C. In this condition the full flow of coolant is directed through the

radiator.

The nanocom evolution is a complete portable diagnostic system for Land Rovers and Range Rovers.

One of it's functions is a set of instruments and the abilty to set a temperature alarm, mine is currently set at 99c
