Peacey initial photos look like you blocked off the original air intake. I was more interested in the routing from the snorkel to the intake.
Cheers,
Remy
i can think of a perfect water hole somewere in blue mountains to test that snorkel if you ever come to nsw for holidays.

I didn't know you could drive in to Jellybean Pool near Glenbrook
There used to be a nice track off Singles Ridge Road towards Yellow Rock (before the bend near the Girl Guides hall) that had some good mud holes and a shallow water crossing. It also had a decent hill climb up rocks and muddy bits, but I reckon this would be closed off now due to expansion of housing down Tall Timbers Rd (or was it Lee Rd?) back up in to Winmalee.
No snorkel required of course, but a nice easy run for the old RRC, and a lot of spinning and burning clutch smells in the Freelander I had back then.
Cheers, Paul.

Pearcy well done mate
I have been researching the snorkel topic for months with limited joy, by coincidence I have been looking at doing the same thing and was considering trying to adapt the safari F250 snorkel ( safari have refused to supply the dimensions to check if it would fit and requested their product not be used) or the patrol or prado snorkels being the only LH fitment snorkels produced by the major manufacturers.
I have seen a number of posts stating people had contacted safari or they promised to develop one and was surprised when I received the followed response saying there is no demand (see email received 8 Sep 09 ).
"XXXX,
I need to be honest here and say that to the best of my knowledge, you
are the first person to request this application, at least directly to
us.
We do get slow but steady enquiry for the so called "Classic" body
style; however not sufficient to warrant development and tooling the way
Safari undertakes it. (Around $50K non recurring costs)
Keep in mind also that when I say the above, we deal directly with the
world's largest wholesalers of Landrover product. EG Britparts,
Bearmach, etc., obviously in the UK. If companies like these are not
requesting your application, we would have to seriously doubt its market
potential.
Sorry about that,
Best Regards,
David
We know there is demand out there and we know no manufacturer in the world currently makes a snorkel so there is potentially an exclusive world market ! ! ! I was going to go back to safari to say how many forward orders would it take before you would commit to designing one. . . anyone interested ?
HOWEVER - I HAVE A SOLUTION - Airflow several months ago said they are interested but I need help as i am currently working in the NT a long way from their factory in Melbourne and have not had time to follow up. They require a vehicle to use to measure, then test fit etc over three separate fittings, the bonus is who does this is likely to get a free snorkel.
I see this as a team effort where all the AULRO community can help and the end result is we will have a factory designed snorkel. I will attach all the required information, and collate a co-ordinated response. What I require is confirmation of the technical information they have requested and a volunteer in VIC to get their P38 measured for a snorkel. So Ron and all you technical guru's please can you confirm the technical details and I look forward to being PMed by a member in VIC. I have no financial interest in this I just want a snorkel ASAP so I can go up the Cape in Nov 2009.
So please work with me, don't pester the factory direct and I'll make it happen. If no one in vic will come to the party, then I will follow pearcys lead and try and modify prior to late Nov 2009.
To start as far as I know all the body exteriors are the same between models. Only the internal engine bay detail could change. Internally there is the GEMS 4.0, 4.6 L V8's with a different airbox these being 1995-1999, and then Bosh 4.0 , 4.6 L V8's 2000-2002 with the new square airbox but in both case the air intake is the same. To the best of my knowledge these are the only factory variants imported into Australia (i.e no diesel). Please see the reply from Airflow and the information required below plus my dimension powerpoint presentation with was the start of my factory discussions.
Thanks for your time and help in advance
The Captain

captain, i have made a prototype for one that i want to put into production, i am just waiting for paul to put his car back together, so i can put it on. He needs one more than anyone. If he is happy, i will have a fiberglass mould made up, and a heap made.
It will be a cut-a-hole-in-the-gard-and-bolt-on style so any mug can install it.
Andy
not quite that low down there blue mountains wise , should have said further up towards north of lithgow near newnes( said blue mountains if interstate is easyer to pin point area) near lost city area on a bush track .well that water hole was deep for me and nissan took water at speed in the motor through his air cleaner ,lost a 4.2 diesel motor out of it now going to cost him few thousand ,he could have used the above item (snorkel ) you are all talking about ,great idea if you love driveing in deep water, cheap insurance.
ah ha! As an ex-resident of the Lower Blue Mountains I don't consider anything west of Blackheath to be in "godzone"... I picked up that term when I lived in "the shire" (Sylvania Heights) but believe the title "godzone" is far more fitting to the beautiful countryside that is the Blue Mountains than the built-up and overpriced areas south of Blakehurst
Now I live/work in/near Canberra... so I guess I lose all credibility in terms of selection of "nice" place to settle
Sorry to hear about your mates Patrol... not nice to lose any 4wd to a water crossing - both me and Peacey can attest to that.
I'm keen to get a snorkel on my P38A not because I like water crossings... just not keen to go through the pain of another write-off if I want/need to cross something more than thigh deep again.
Captain - all credit to you once again. You are certainly a man who knows how to get things done. I applaud your efforts, and am in your debt for your previous endeavours that brought about the rear carrier on mine and several other members P38A's.
Andy - thanks for responding to Captain. I'm still with you of course, but wanted to see what you thought of Captain's plans before responding. All going to plan, I'll have the motor running again by the end of the coming weekend and be up in Sydney within the next couple of weeks to try out those snorkel and sliders design.
Am hoping to go to that LR show at Castle Hill on 27-Sep. I'd better get out to the garage...
Cheers, Paul.

I really hate missing out on a bargain, and a free airflow snorkel sounds ridiculous in anyones language, but I honestly feel its appropriate to wait for Andrew to finish his version first. It seems to me he supports and helps a large part of this P38 community through his parts business venture and advice and be given a shot at making something back on his new Snorkel (and don't forget the compressor kit, and sliders!!!).
I haven't been loitering around here for long, but with out a lie, he must have saved me the price of an average snorkel already.
Geez this all hurts though... I could get some real joy out of an airflow "branding" of the pretty pig!
Andy, you need to PM me your bank details again please, I still have to cash you up for that HEVAC I received the other day.
P.S. Captain, In saying all that, if Andy decides he can't or doesn't want to go ahead with his version, you can put the "pretty pig" (my '95 P38 4.6HSE) on the list for the guinea pig role with airflow in Melbourne. Given enough notice, they could keep the car for a week... it is also dual fuel which could tick another box as far as variables are concerned.
Andy
Thanks for your PM can you give me an indication of when you might expect to have a prototype ready and better yet when do you think you might have a product available for sale.
Regards
Captain
