In D'ranged's case, the tent folds forward from the trailer axle over the drawbar. This is the bit the ladder is normally attached to. You then step up inside the tailgate at the other end and access via the other door.

In my case, my roof tent has an extended awning which covers the ladder section and you can zip a room onto. At lower heights you need to duck under this. Not so on alot of other models of roof tent.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks CC.

Exactly what I was getting at.

I am considering going this way myself ie putting tent on trailer and having the option of mounting it on the vehicle when required.

righto between getting kid around to their sports i have done some bits and pieces

i did have a mig organised to borrow but miss the boat, so back to the stick welder which i might leave it at that cause i have reminded myself my skills are a little lacking

    a couple of hiccups

looks like the tyres will hang out past the tub, 10mm or so, either i provided the wrong measurement and the engineering company that welded it up got it wrong

and the grease nipples for the grease-able shackles are on the inside

any ways the chassis is done, will finish welding when i have the MIG

will place the tub on this afternoon so i can work out brackets etc

than work out how to individually secure 5 mountain bikes

    Welding

    Weeds

Just remember when welding Duragal tube especially with a Mig, grind off the Gal coating in the area being welded. Unless there is another gas that likes burning Gal fumes Because Argoshield Light dosn't like it.

    Looking good kelvin,
I wouldnt stress on that 10mm too much, my guess is those springs will barely flex enough to let the axle move anywhere near the lip of the guards!!!!!

Ive found my new favourite trailer leaf springs this week. Helping a mate rebuilding his 4.5m makocraft trailer. We have used some 79series cruiser rear leafs, nearly 1400mm long eye to eye. With the two load leafs sitting on the concrete the 5 main leafs ride on a 750kg ish trailer almost as soft as coils and a four link!

i will be using the existing mounts 'captive nuts' in the tub

the draw bar size is a good idea mate, as you know i had to beef mine up to take out a little spring, but i like how it turned out, so worked well....

    cheers

well some progress over the weekend and with only 4 maybe 3 weekend till we go i think i will be under the pump

what i got up to over the weekend
    • chassis completed, the MIG did help out heaps, thanks to a fellow forum member
    • rear suppport legs fitted, a little to far under for my liking but it will do
    • tub mounted, just need right length bolts
    • tailgate fitted
    • ordered new brackets for the tailgate latches to hook onto
    • picked up some wiring connectors
    • found two Second hand BFG AT's
    • fellow forum member donated a disco rim
    • brought two spare tyre winches, buggered if i know how to fit them without losing ground clearance
    • seperated roof top tent from its base so that a zip can be installed and an awning made to go over the kitchen
    • registered the trailer
    • decided on the kitchen and the layout including water tank and fridge
whats happening today, between 2:30 and 5:00pm
    • chase up a new u bolt for the axle
    • drop tent off
    • drop tyres and rims off
    • pick up tow hitch
    • make plate for fitting the tow hitch
    • obtain various nuts and bolts
    • pick up a jockey wheel
hopefully by the end of the week it will be towable

    Looking good Kelvin.

Where did you source the stabiliser legs? I'm looking for some of those for my trailer project.

the only thing disappointing was i needed to jam some washers between the mounting plate and the legs mechanism itself to stop the wobbling around, made it heaps more stable
