    DISCO 1 ROOF LINING PROJECT

You fellas on here have been a great help for me over the past couple years. so i wanted to give something back and it was time to redo the sunken roof lining from my $1,000 98 300TDI D1. so i took a few pics as i went along.

The material i purchased was from Clarke Rubber here in Cairns (very helpful there were) i dont have the receipt on me to tell what the exact name of the fabric was but it comes in 1600mm wide and was approx $22 per metre.

I ordered 2.7metres in length to be safe and ended up with approx 200mm left over. The extra length actually came in handy when attaching the material to the broom handle so it was luck i got a bit extra.

The Glue i used was Selleys Kwik Grip GEL in a green and white container. DO NOT USE THE RED SELLEYS KWIK GRIP CONTAINER AS THAT IS A LIQUID GLUE THE GOES EVERYWHERE AND DOES GRIP AS WELL. (I USED THAT IN MY VS STATION WAGON A FEW MONTHS BACK AND STARTED COMING DOWN ABOUT 3 DAYS LATER)

I ended up needing about 1 & a quarter tins 800ml tins of the Selleys Kwik Grip GEL at about $32 each. In hindsight a 1.6litre tin would've cost me about $50. So armed with about $60 of material and another $60 worth of glue i decided to have a crack at it.

(TIP: The plastic applicators that come with the glue have a serrated or corrugated edge that works really well....for about 3 mins. If your doing this yourself buy a rubber applicator with a serrated or corrugated edge. I ended up dipping my hand in the tins and smearing it on evenly with my hands as it was alot faster and even with the *****y applicator my hands were getting covered.

I started off by placing the fibre glass face down. (the way it sits in the car) and cutting a curve to the match the windscreen end. i left about an inch and a half and i glued this first. Once this was dry i flipped it back over and rolled the remaining fabric on to a broom handle.

Rounded windscreen area i cut and Glued 1st. Obviously clamps are pretty handy to use. its pretty crucial you get this part right and straight otherwise the rear end may end up crooked

Moving along. Just Spread the glue evenly. The directions say you need to glue both sides and wait 20-40mins before attaching them together but as it was so hot up here in Cairns i just put glue on the fibreglass. By the time i had finished a section it was almost dry anyway. All up i did it in 5 sections.

All glued down. The trickiest part was around the Alpine windows. pay careful attention to the curve on the alpine windows. It wants to come up and unstick itself pretty often

Heres the finished product minus some extra holes that need to be cut but i will wait til next weekend so it can dry properly. Cost $120 about 2-3 intense hours of my time, A sharp scissors and a Broom.

Note:When cutting out the square holes cut them in an X corner to corner so you can glue the triangle pieces to the opposite side of the fibreglass.

    I HOPE SHE STICKS!!!
