Thanks Justin. Yes the diaphragms were replaced. Is adjusting them just a small screw on each carb?

I am not sure on what transfer case I have but it is a 5sp 1986. I am going to try and source a good second hand rear diff if I can get one for a decent price as that should be an easy swap?

    Looks great for its age.
I spied your multi meter in one of the pics. Good to hear all the electrical bugs are ironed out now

Ah of course sorry didn't look hard enough at the pics it is a 5spd...😑. Th e transfer case is an lt230 and usually give little problem however they also can suffer from input gear spline wear ( output shaft from tgr gearbox wear accompanies this) centrr diff thrust washer wear and intermediate shaft bearing preload issues.
If the rear diff centre is worn i would be very surprised... axle spline and drive member, trailing arm bushes or upper a frame ball joint are the most common items.

And carb mix adjustment is usually done down through the centre of the needle carrier.

If you have HIF SU carbs then they have external jet orifice height adjustment screws yes however no diapragms.

When the needles were replaced were the actual jets checked also? The jet usually wears at a similar rate...😕

Not sure if the jets were replaced. The place that did them has said that they will tune them if I bring the car back in so all should be good but I wouldn't mind learning how to tune and balance them myself.

Now in the process of getting it on club plates.

Also a bit of other minor stuff, i have 60ft of chinese sound deadening that will be going in soon and the headlining out and ripped off ready to be recovered.

    Cant wait!

    Looks great

Like JC I'd be surprised if the rear diff is stuffed. They get a little bit of backlash in them but nothing compared to what's likely in the axles/flanges.

When I got mine the rear drive flanges were flogged to the point of just having thin knife-like bits in the flange where splines used to be.
Easiest way to check them is to put the handbrake on, jack up one rear wheel at a time, remove the dustcap and rotate the wheel back and forwards looking for relative movement between the axle and the flange.
In my case although the flange splines were almost completely gone the axle splines still had plenty of meat left. Installed some new flanges and most of the backlash was gone.

Great info from the people on this forum, thank you.

Will test that out over the weekend. I have heard perentie flanges are harder wearing?

    Hi all,

Being an 86 v8 110 County, which gearbox and transfer case will it have?

    Lt77 and Lt230?

    Or Lt85

Also, not immediately but at some point I am up for front and rear diffs as they (front mainly) and wheel flanges as they are big contributers to the backlash. What should I be searching when looking for diffs and wheel flanges? I am assuming they used many different ones over the years so what will be a drop in replacements?

It will be an LT85 and LT230.

There's plenty of drive flanges available. Just make sure you order the correct ones, the County has a longer spline than Defender so you need the flange to suit whatever stub axle/ axle combo you have. For example, the flanges from the Salisbury rear on my Defender 130 wont fit the Salisbury rear on my County.
