    V8 110 County build

    Hi all,

I am starting a project thread for my newly acquired 1986 V8 110.

After a year of owning a Disco 3, I sold it to fund more of a project car, hence the 110. I loved the D3 but maintenance and service costs meant it was prohibitive for me to keep. I will upload a bit more of a background behind the County when I remember it but it seems to have had a pretty good life so far. It has had a respray at some point and looks very straight. It has been stroked and bored out to 4.2L. It was bought from a fellow enthusiast so that made me feel comfortable buying it.

I have owned the car for about 2 weeks now, most of that has been spent doing odd jobs to get it on it's way to being road worthy:
    - Fixed electrical gremlins (crazy stuff was going on behind the dash due to some home made wiring). It also needed a new hazard and headlight switch.
    - Removed previous owners huge sound system
    - Changed front brake pads/hoses. Bleed
    - Replaced a couple perished belts
    - Handbrake shoes and adjusted
    - Oil change

It is currently in getting its RW. I am getting the LPG system completely removed and will be running on fuel only. This is for a couple reasons, mainly as I need the space in the rear of the car.

This will be an ongoing project, registered on club plates and used on weekends. I previously made a camping set up in my D3 which I will be doing something similar in this car. See pictures below of the setup in the D3:

    The plans:
    • Rear slide out kitchen
    • Change front seats
    • recover rear seats to match fronts
    • water tank
    • tint
    • Sort out neater bullbar or bumper bar. Issue being clearing the PTO winch
    • roof rack
    • door seals
    • recover headlining
    • wooden or rubber floors
    • new carpet up front
    • sound insulation
    • Dual battery
    • tidy up dash (have bought plastic centre console)
    • Whole car tidy up

Can't wait to get it registered and let the fun begin. Can't wait to go on a trip with it!

    D3 camping set up

This was my camping set up in the D3. Basically a couple boxes with a platform attached. Could be completely removed in about 5 minutes by 1 person.

    Hi Paul,
I made a tube bull bar for another member on here (Weeds). It was designed to fit the PTO winch as fitted to Perenties etc.
I noticed he had it for sale a while ago, not sure if he still has it. If it's the type of bar you like then it might pay to contact him.
I can still make them new but not for this sort of price.

Details and pics of bar here.... Rijidij tube bar upgrade

For sale ad here........ PTO Winch & Rijidij Tube Bar

    Cheers, Murray

Thank you for the response Murray! I did not know you made a bar for the PTO, it looks fantastic to be honest! It is a shame the PTO sticks out so much but the bar you made up seems to hide it as best as possible. I will be contacting the seller.

I will be also sending you a PM in regards to modifying a wheel carrier.

    Cheers! Paul

I like the idea of keeping the PTO winch but if I can't figure out a bar that looks like it belongs there then I may sell it and buy an electric winch.

Can the PTO be mounted further back somehow? Shorten one of the drive shafts and slide it back a tad?

When I designed that particular bar for the PTO we made it so the winch stayed in exactly the same position as it was so we knew the shafts etc would fit back up without modifying.
A PTO winch could possibly be moved back, depending on what's in the way behind the grille, for example, the cross braces.
I don't think there would be a problem shortening a winch drive shaft as they are slow moving.

    Cheers, Murray

I have recently purchased another defender.....problem is it's the wife car and she really likes the tube bar.......I was hoping to fit in into the existing bar.

It should be a problem shortening the drive shafts for The PTO......I would assume it would need some machining.

If I had the coin I would get a new one made by Murray with some changes.

Bit of an update, the car has a RWC and is just waiting on getting registered on club plates.

It is now running on fuel, however very rich. I have never touched carbies before so some learning to do. Any information on tuning the carbs would be appreciated! They have fresh needles in them as they were dried out from the lpg system.

The backlash is also an issue I need to sort out. It is a combination of worn front and rear diffs as well as in the transfer case. I can't front the bill to get them reconditioned so not sure of my options.

Costs are adding up, hopefully I can get it registered and running well so that the other jobs can be done over time

    Carb diaphragms replaced?
And likely the transfer case is in need of some intermediate shaft thrust washers by now too. Also check a frame ball joint and even though counties were supposed to be oil fed axles they still wore splines.
