Can you give me an idea of the fully open and clossed lengths + OD?

Just an idea, I carry a HD coil spring as a backup. Takes up bugger all room as you can stuff things inside it.

Full, not useable, but full extension is 515mm, from bottom of piston to top of top plate, compressed is 200mmish, hard to tell as not compressing with weight

top plate is 160mm OD, piston is 130mm OD but requires 170mm bottom plate, so the bag can roll out over the piston on full compression, bag is approx same OD as piston

Remember to carry bottom spring plate and some nuts and bolts to fit it too

Yeah exactly... I already have some spare coils, but air bags would be easier to swap (assuming they have the same bolt pattern). Plus, they can be squashed up to take up almost no space.

I am concerned that on hard landings (i.e. after unexpected bumps) I may damage the top of the bag...

They're fairly tough, I haven't managed to bust one here yet. I carry big weights on some very rough terrain. I think the only way of damaging a bag would be a very sharp object forced into the side.

Soo Matt, where are you going to mount the compressor/compressors? I stuck mine under the driver seat and now drives me insane with its vibes and noise I'm going to move it out under the front fender somehow Ben's converted aircon compressor will over come this problem. May need a oil/water separator on it though.
