but when did they start producing the 80" hard top unit...

I was led to believe it was early 50's and then retrofitted?
Yes thats basically right. However they did have a early type hard top that is slightly different to the production version in 1949.

Its known as a Pre Pro Hard top. Quite a few were fitted to the batches of early Derbyshire 80" Fire Engines.

The Radfords 80" FE has one on it if you visit the S1 Club forum. The most noticeable difference is the front capping is completely different as are the roof ribs

    Hi Mike

Somewhere I have seen a picture of a short top with the rear curtain folded up in a early farm tractor book that I have read.

The Land rover was towing a implement such as a side delivery hay rake or a buck rake .

Curse the toxic side effects of candle wax as it also diminishes memory !

I will have a look through some of my farm books to see if I can find it.

    Cheers Arthur

Just a word, in my experience the early canvas hoods don't seal as well as the later type with the wrap around rear flap that tucked into the pockets at the side.

The early type puckers along the strap between each loop where the later type is drawn tight against the hood bow (stick) making a relatively tight seal.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Thanks both

I did the same thing ..scanned those pics from the Taylor book... great minds think alike .. The book also shows detailed pics of the strapping setup. A chap on the UK forum helped me out with more info too. NOW , I have enough info to go ahead with sewing one up...

Just have to buy in 3 metres of ripstop canvas . No eyelets needed .
