    Old plans for the future

    Hi Dennis and Mike

There are so many Capstan's about that have been removed but are now without their kit.

Could we make a collection of detailed drawings of those parts as they come to light and then have them collated onto a DVD, that then could be handled by Dave to be sold at a nominal sum to cover costs.

Another DVD that would be handy to anyone making up restoration parts, is the DVD containing plans of all the body panel pressings, I believe that DVD exists already as a copy of the blueprints was taken back from Sydney back to the UK.

    Just a thought.

That's why I posed the question to him, it's useless without the mounts that hold the carrier, dog clutch etc. When I bought my Capstan years ago it had no mounts nor dog clutch etc, I had to fabricate the lot, it's do-able but difficult, well it was for me a Reg/nse anyway here's hoping he has all the bits, cheers Dennis

    AHhh ummm ???

I don't pick it up until 21st December when I get to Brisvegas. The photo shows the shaft and spring and the plate mount. Its a MAP so earlier than Fairey so me thinks should be correct for Series 1. The Dogs are available on ebay and the brackets . I have no dowels in the chassis on the 109 so they will have to be drilled and welded in. I will have a good look at Keiths when I drop in although his Jumbuck has a Disco diesel with a Capstan on the front. I am having a look at Ians ( Back in) 48/49 and his 57 when I pass through Adelaide and will check out if I need any more bits.
Still cant get hold of a lay gear part RTC 7192 for the Fairey overdrive. I am looking into getting them made here in Perth. I ran the idea past Craddocks and they are keen to get some made up as well. I have a very good gear cutter close by and he has the correct hobb for the cutter already. If anyone else is interested in rebuilding an Overdrive you will need one of these , easier to get it through me on this run than buy it through Craddocks after I send them over to the UK.

For those that are not sure, get hold of the series 2 parts manual and that manual does show the two types of kit, are they also shown in reasonable detail, from those drawing's you can find what is correct for the front of the engine that is fitted in your vehicle.

Keep your eye's open for any extra series one fittings they are really scarce and let us know on here if some show up.

I have seen tubes welded in the positions for the Capstan mount plate holes and I can't see why by doing that and then using longer bolts should be a problem?

Using Rivnuts would be the most practical way though.

I swaped this winch for a 48 grill & some labour on a guys 48 firewall about 10 years ago, its taken me about 10 years to find all the bits betweem the motor & winch. The engine brackets are a copy of ones Russelrover had ( thanks Jim) , the winch mounting I made up from an origional the guy i got it off had & the roller brackets I fabricated out of steel using a origional alum one as a pattern & then had them galvanised , then wiped them with week acid to make them look like alum. Got it working late last year . Looks like i,ve got a water leak , probely the rotten after market water pump I fitted last year , had to grind all the bottom of the pump to clear the timing cover & drill all the holes over size so the bolt holes would line up , or may be heater tap needs a new packing .

Good on you Mike for going to the trouble to get the shafts made!

Years ago Diana had some parts made for people who owned winches; I made the aluminium casting shown in one of 1950landy's photos for her.

At Wayne's request I made some patterns for the aluminium parts that support the fairlead-roller - incidentally an excellent job done by 1950landy on his steel copies - unfortunately when I cast them there was too much porosity in the metal The solution is to make a new furnace so that I can use my graphite crucible, but too many other jobs got in the way.

Anyway; be aware that I can make castings if someone is desperate for them, but I will need to clear an immobile S3 out of the foundry before I can do that,

    Cheers Charlie
