Thread: Brakes

Depends on your attitude to keeping it original. For normal use the the 86/88 brakes are "adequate", bearing in mind the power/weight ratio and loaded weight of the Series 1.

Certainly, long wheelbase brakes (I would use 2a brakes) will perform better, but consider the difficulty of getting a suitable master cylinder. (I assume the one you have is functional or repairable). And the lwb brakes have a reputation of being more difficult to bleed.

I have just ordered a new master cylinder for my 86" but went back to the UK for it, 50 quid delivered. I t seems like that all models of master cylinder are available for a similar price.

An 86" master cylinder for 50GBP delivered ?
Is it the original 3 bolt master cylinder that was fitted to the Series I ? You can change to a 2 bolt from a Series II and kits are available to do this.

The original looks like this (this one's a pattern one for a Minerva).

Hi Colin,
It's the two hole flange type as I couldn't find a correct three hole flange one, do you have a contact or supplier where I can get the correct unit as I was really after one?

Unfortunately they are like rocking horse droppings.
Wrinklearthur put me onto the fact that the Minerva master cylinder is identical (it would be as it's basically a Series I), someone on Ebay in Germany had a number of them for sale a while ago.

The alternative is to get your old one (if you have it) re-sleeved.

The kit saves you drilling a hole in the outrigger.

I did a lot of Googleing this morning and came across these guys in India, I sent them an email and we'll what comes back. Initially dubious but if the quality is good it might be a good source for these bits.....
