    small update

1-2. the cross shaft has some movement in here, nothing major probably at a guess 1mm of movement

    3. the other area is this shaft is not one piece has a pin securing it into position and also has 1mm movement...

I guess all these little mm of movements equate to a lot of slack in the system. I really do not want to remove and tighten the fingers on the pressure plate but that might just do it. Still cannot understand why it worked as is in the 186, 202 not being that different.

Might just bite the bullet and pull out the box, tighten down the fingers and reinstall. Already wasted a lot of time mucking about.

    finally getting somewhere

    1. through the gearstick hole you can actually tighten up the fingers so when i saw that wow.... I don't have to remove the gearbox as I was about to do...

    2. rotated all and tightened up which has resulted in a much closer gap between the fingers and the top hat and so have a working clutch.

    3. 'I' is the gap now much much smaller then before but may tighten up more when i fine tune it better

I just need to ensure the fingers are equally close to the top hat inside. It seems to have worked for now and have fwd and reverse movement by engaging the clutch. so happy i can fine tune this now without the need to remove the gearbox. hopefully this will be the end of me complaining about the clutch issues and may have saved what little hair i have left. thats a win for me today, happy as.

I thought/said you might be surprised if you eliminated that extra 1/4 inch of free play at the pedal.
As a matter of interest, what is the measurement of the free play at the pedal now?

    clutch sorted no free play

Xtreme to answer your Qs no free play at all - fine tuned the fingers and now there is no free play, I know there should be some but it feels tight and happy with that. couldn't resist bringing her out to the open to play - no brakes yet which made it interesting. had to push it back into the garage as there is a small decline going backwards.

enjoy - wrapped its at this point now. just enjoying the cold sun and getting some sun on the panels. Another one of those pinch me moments, cannot believe she is mobile once more. just need to sort out those damn brakes next. lots of little things need doing mostly do up bolts etc

    1. side view with my LR sign double sided on there

Sometimes things are better when they're not "tight" Joe. You really do need some free play (aka a gap between the top hat and fingers) otherwise your thrust bearing, top hat and pressure plate fingers won't last too long and then you'll need to remove the gear box to replace them all.

Yes! And likely to cause the clutch to slip with damage to driven plate and possibly pressure plate and flywheel as well.

    update of sorts

Points taken before finishing off the clutch I will slacken off the top hat and the fingers to allow a little wiggle room now that i know i can access the necessary nuts through the gearstick hole. thanks for that. bit cold so did some photography instead...

    1. taken with my iphone 8+

    2. then had this old thing and decided to use to see the difference if any in quality from a proper digital camera

    3. taken with the Nikon, exact same location ...

Those nuts should be staked once you finished the adjustments; just like they presumably were before you interfered with them.
