Tiny bit excited

1 the door striker and backing plate was in need of some paint so sanded and painted hung to dry

2 said door lock backing plate temp fitted to the car which now means i can close both doors and no need to fit ropes to secure the doors closed

3 non LR related item, found this strange looking drill out of the Def clean out, unusual to me anyway, whats it for? has thicker shaft at base, base of shaft has grooves cut out of diff lengths on all sides, head looks more like a concrete drill then anything else???

It is indeed a concrete drill. More commonly known as a Hilti Drill, which is actually the brand name of the drill itself.

1 found this bit for the rear tailgate centre piece needed some cleaning and prepping for paint

2 sanded back ready for paint

3 painted, my green 4L tin paint is not sealing in the tin well so now the paint has dried on top but still usable

4 Non LR S1 related went to local shops and found 3x D4's so parked next to the last one, mines far left. So now we had D4x4x4 (4x D4's which are 4x4)

1 the centre reinforcing piece of the tailgate was ready to rivet on which looked ok except the back looks kinda weird

2 i could of entered the rivet from the rear so that the tailgate when open is flat and smooth, this just doesn't look right to me, any suggestions or is there another panel over the rivets on the inside to cover the exposed rivet ends.

Those rivets are going to be a nucence , every thing will get caught on them . You would be best getting some solid Alum Rivets then you can hammer them flat on the inside . If uou can't find any I have some here I could send you I had to get extra for my 80" as they short changed me when I originally ordered mine so now have lots left over .

I agree with 1950landy. I'm pretty certain it was originally spoit welded on. Series 1 tailgates were pretty flimsy compared to S2/3, and even these often have broken spot welds.

They also always have that crease in them were some one has droped them onto some thing .

I have these solid alum rivetr's I bought from Bolt Masters when i restored my door tops a fwe years back . I can send you 20 for free or you could try one of the bolt co's . They sell these for repairing alum boats. Attachment 141664 If you put the head to the inside of the tub & fit a ss flat washer on the shank then peen them over they should look ok. These are not as domed as the ones they use on the top of the capping so will sit a lot flatter. The other thing you could use is 3/16" roof screws which are flat & get some acorn nuts for the thread They have a similar head to these rivet's . Repco have 3/16" X 1/2" I bought some this morning . I would have a go at knocking the crease out while you have the stiffener using s block of wood.

Almost all Series tailgates have the centre rib damaged where it has been dropped onto the standard towbar jaw, fitted to (almost) all Australian Series vehicles.

I will see if i can find a better solution to the rivets for the middle rib support on tailgate (screws?)

1 first p/side locking mechanism for tailgate, cleaned and painted and installed. I think there is a small bracket for this which i cannot locate so riveted on for now unless i find the missing bracket

2 d/side done as well

3 moved onto the pig tail chain support for the inner side of tailgate all good, cleaned and painted pig tail, other is badly bent not sure i can heat and re-bend into shape, but needs like a bike inner tube to go over the old chain and to protect the paint, so found some old heat shrink but is too short for now. so out to find something suitable before installing

1 pig tail hook newish repaired painted vs old untouched, not sure how they managed to bend this or if i can bend back into shape

2 the black foam is from bunnings to use over the chains holding up the tailgate

3 drilled out the rib rivets and am thinking to use smaller screws as seen in pic

4 inside pic of the screw head i am considering using, seems ok though not original
