Tiny bit excited

1. link for the steering temporarily fitted into place, still not sure about this relay being any good. i see they are approx $220 for new. seems like i need to hammer the top arm to rotate, surely with no load on this relay it should rotate freely. admittedly it has no oil in it which wont help but even when i did pour oil in, it made no difference. note the tie rod is brand new.

couple of red battery cables have been ordered for my application with the holden 186 to go from starter to switch to battery

due to pick up the D4 today so will get back my bottle jack to lift front and fit the front diff into position

The steering relay is quite difficult to turn by hand, even when serviceable, and without oil is probably impossible. They are relatively easy to pull to bits, but be careful and follow the manual instructions, as the spring may cause injury.

Even if left for long periods without oil, it may well come good simply by refilling, replacing the seals and using it a bit. The relay can be overhauled in situ, which is just as well, since it is likely to be a major job to remove it.

1. finally got around to lifting the chassis with the return of my jack and slotting the front suspension/axle into position, nothing secured but just in position. Need to find some more bolts and have some shackle nuts on order to tighten up the suspension. worked well and very happy with it now.

getting closer to attempting to start her again, and have watched some more youtube channels re timing for ignition. fingers crossed. battery cables coming as well, so will be a easier start with proper connections. note screwdriver in pass side front susp for when you have no bolt yet...

Just bear in mind not to finally tighten the shackle bolts until the full load is on and it had done a short drive.

Found some more steel in the garage for the rear tabs for the tub, just need to cut out the steel and do away with the cut outs from the spring set as its almost impossible and slow to drill holes into.

1. was looking at the drop arms which i have two and not sure which is the correct one to fit. My guess is this 2nd pic which is what i am leaning towards fitting.

bought some rubber for the air vents above bonnet but they are wrong damn, did say for S1-2a, but its shorter then expected. gearbox got the oven cleaner treatment, no pic sorry

Attachment 157772 Attachment 157773 As you can see from the photo's from my S1 parts book , the cranked one goes to the bottom of the steering relay with a clamp bolt & the other fits in the rocker arm of the steering box & is held on with a nut & washer , my guess would be it is some type of locknut as there is no spring washer shown.

The lower one in your picture does not have a clamp bolt - it belongs on the steering box, I believe.

1-2. had some custom made battery cables made up and delivered today via ebay. very happy with the result and now i can crank over the engine with no sparks with temp cables and wiring. And she does crank over nicely. just another small piece of the puzzle in place. surprisingly was difficult to get the two lengths of cables, some places had them in blue colour cables and not red, others did not have the lengths i wanted. anyway done.

1. fan belt arrived and installed, doesn't look too bad - have not touched the alternator pulley but might see how it goes when it fires up and is spinning, seems to align not to bad...

2. front shocks arrived today...

3. front shocks installed, am i correct in having a spring washer between the nut and washer or does it not need a spring washer per se...

other deliveries due today as well including the rear shocks... trying to source some U bolts so i can bolt the diff/springs together and move the LR back out of the rain a little

1. installed the bonnet today to keep the rains off the engine, drained the oil to fill with new and found water had penetrated inside. just need to undo the sump to paint and then refill with fresh oil maybe tomorrow, have new gasket for the sump but its messy work undoing the sump on the ground which has traces of oil everywhere. beginning to look like a proper LR...
