Tiny bit excited

1 holden adaptor fitted into place, flywheel will not align with 6 bolts, need to have another go, can match up 4 out of 6 bolts to secure the flywheeel into position, are there markings on the flywheel to look out for?

2 problem is my alternator pulley and crank pulley do not line up, alternator can slide back somewhat but i need it to slide fwd which it has reached its max position fwd, pretty sure the harm balancer is in its correct position and would need to remove engine to push it further in. Unless the alternator is different to original one fitted to this engine. forgot to add HELP...

Bit hard to see with the hoses in the way but can you fit some spacers between the lug on the alternator & the mounting brackets . You should be able to mount the adjusting bracket on the back side of the alternator bracket or put a joggle in the adjusting strap or a spacer so it will bolt on. From what I can see the harmonic balancer will not go back far enough to line up with the alternator pully. You also need to have the water pump pully in place to line up all three.
The photo of the flywheel & adaptor are too dark to see what is going on there. If the flywheel came off & was bolted on with six bolts it should go bac on with six bolts. If it is only a little bit out make sure you start all six bolts before tightening any of them up.

1-2. gave up on the other stuff and wanted to lift the axles up onto the tyres so easier to move around and prep for paint. must say getting excited about the build now. will have another go at the flywheel. i think it may need to go on a certain way as twice only 4 bolts lined up.

will have another look at the alternator as well. just glad to have some more room now with the tyres out of the way. had a heart attack as first it looked as if the tyres (rims) did not fit my hubs but giggled around and fitted well. that's it.

Joe, the flywheel will only line up in one spot. You have to turn it around to get the right spot. Looking at the pic of your engine it looks like you have HQ up size water pump with standard bearing. So you need an HQ up to HZ 6 cyl water pump pulley. The alternator bracket that bolts to the engine block is the same from EH up to VK 6 cyl with no a.c. or p.s. so the alternator should line up easily. Have you got the balancer fitted all the way in? Very tight fit. Alternator pulleys can be spaced out or in as needed by removing the nut and fitting or removing a spacer behind the pulley. The adjuster bracket fits onto the water pump bolt furtherest to the passengers side. There should be a longer bolt for it in the water pump. Cheers and good luck.

1-4 better shots of the alternator pulley, still haven't sourced a water pump pulley but suggestions noted and will look into that. basically the alternator needs to slide fwd but it cannot that's my dilemma. only spacers are washers used at the back of the alternator to close off the gap between alternator and engine bracket.

7-8 again before and after pics after cleaning the front and rear axles, much easier now that i can roll them around, still more to do but happy so far with the look and clean of them

9 loving the look of my springs now cleaned up and painted once more.

still need to sort out alternator positioning, water pump pulley, flywheel fitment, more axle cleaning/painting, once rear end of engine sorted will bolt up the box and throw on the firewall (getting closer, just hope the engine fires up) oops need to clean and paint the engine sump as well as fill new oil.

just want to be sure i am buying the correct pulley. attached are two diff listings for pulleys of ebay

2-3. seems like the pulley cannot exceed 40mm otherwise will foul on the water pump. found this on ebay.

ebayer seems to think he has the right pulley for me at $47 excluding post. wanted some more measurements and has all 3 types fitted to holdens apparently.

1. small update found some retaining rings (forgot what they are called) to secure rubber heater hoses onto the engine, double checked my photos and on the internet and had the hoses wrong way round ie top hose goes to the right side chamber.

2. measurement wanted by ebayer for securing the right water pump pulley. so hopefully that will be sorted soon. still need a solution for the alternator, will look into removing the retaining nut on the face and space out the pulley with the alternator in its current position, may help a little not sure it will come out as far as i need it to though.

Hi Joe, Both those pulleys are wrong. The first one is the right depth but wrong bolt circle diameter. The second one is for heavy duty Water pump, which is also fitted with a viscous fan hub, as fitted to VB Commodore and up including WB 6 cyl. Not HQ as advertised.

You can undo the big pulley nut on your alternator and fit spacer washers behind the pulley to get it to line up.

Those hoses are only to warm up the inlet manifold to stop icing up on cold mornings and are not really needed but it doesn't matter which way the hoses are fitted to the engine or manifold.

1. flywheel lined up and bolted into position, just kept rotating until all bolts lined up

that nut on the alternator is tight so need to be careful in removing so i don't damage the fins as the fins rotate whilst trying to undo the nut.

trying to line up the clutch plate, pressure plate is easy to do as it has bolts. i think workshops have a spare gearbox shaft they use to line up the clutch plate, i don't. i need to build something to line up the clutch, hole gets smaller as it enters the rear of the engine. tried a few handles on screwdrivers but they either fit well into the rear of engine, or well into the clutch not both as they are diff size holes.

replacement water pump pulley is on its way, lets hope it matches up...

If you have an 1/2" air impact driver you should be able to get the alternator nut undone with out damaging the fan. Or there are a few video's on U tube that show you how to do it by placing the fan blade against something solid to stop the fan from turning . If you stick a screw driver in it will only bend the blades
