These are from my S2/2A parts catalogue for 11" front brakes DSCN4317.jpgDSCN4318.jpg Note only showing one cylinder but parts list shows two per side.

    brakes + prop/tailshafts

2 possible brakes from LRSeries in UK have these two brakes which are very similar to mine but not sure which one to buy.

    BRAKE KIT - AXLE SET - DA6045

    Search - DA6044

1-3 close up pics of my brake cylinders off driver side only, they both look very similar (identical) with two holes (inlet + outlet) but shouldn't they have another hole for the bleeding of air, one is the inlet of brake fluid, next is another brake pipe from top to bottom connecting both cylinders to each other, then a bleed pipe???

4-5 brake shoes identical either side

6-7 front propshaft pulled apart not realising i had to find the matching arrows, so that was sorted before installing one end only in case gearbox needs to be removed again due to clutch issues. the tailshaft was already partially fitted without arrow alignments so its coming off to redo alignment before securing.

Overseas online suppliers like paddocks have closed off online orders as well as some others i have found of late which is making ordering of parts little tricky moving fwd.

Brake cylinders are same top and bottom - only one bleeding point between the two, on the lower one - which is part of the reason these can be a pain to bleed!

But they are handed left and right.

Comparing your cylinders to the pictures in the parts books, they look like the ones for the four cylinder vehicles. The ones for the six cylinder brakes have a shaft on the piston that extends beyond the rubber boot.

The numbers I have for these are 243744 and 243743 for Series 3 and GWC303 and GWC304 for Series 2a. I suspect that these parts are interchangeable and the different number just reflects a different supplier.

    small update

    1. removed the tailshaft to find the arrows to align both ends and cannot find it anywhere, the front propshaft was obvious and evident but the tailshaft has no markings or arrows per se

    2. used this for the brake reservoir, is this ok to use? just normal everyday brake oil for the brakes

That bottle looks old so if the brake fluid if it has been opened & you have had it for a while throw it away & buy new fluid , Brake fluid attracts moisture & you don't want to get any moisture in your cylinders , it can also give you a sponge brakes.

    1. In the absence of marlings, align the two parts of the prop shaft so that the two yokes on the shaft bits are in the same plane.

2, Right type of fluid, but as 1950Landy says, do not use that if it has been opened. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, that is, it absorbs moisture. This does two things; firstly it lowers the boiling point of the fluid, and if the fluid boils when the brakes heat up with heavy use, they stop working - unlikely to be a problem with an old Landrover; but, secondly, the water absorbed in the brake fluid will cause corrosion on the inside of the master and wheel cylinders, which will rapidly destroy the seal, especially if the vehicle is not driven much and even more so if it lives close to the coast. This particularly would apply to a restored Landrover on the Northern Beaches.
