If you can make it all work it will be great . I had my then series 1 as a daily driver for 7 years and while it all worked great, I always regretted the butchery but back then you did such things where I would not now.

You should be very happy with your progress and what you have done in slowly bringing your Series 1 back to life.

    Devastated today

Thank you 101RRS for your kind words.

Hatched a plan to get the old girl moving today if possible just even in the garage, laid bricks in front and back of S1 with enough room to move 2feet fwd and back. Started the old girl once warm she seems to love to idle along. radiator was fitted and filled with water without the cap and everything seemed to be going well... here are my observations (and problems)

    1. biggest issue i have is the smoke from the exhaust, i thought after a while it may subside or disappear given the motor had been sitting idle for years but no it smokes more evident under acceleration at low revs (seems like black and white smoke). don't think i have the strength to remove and refit another engine. i think there are 'stop smoking' additives might have to try them to see if at last resort it stops the smoking - could be rings so devastated

    2. i have a clutch issue which may need the gearbox out to sort out, its just not engaging the clutch mechanism when i depress the clutch, should of known really when i depress the clutch pedal the only resistance is the pedal itself. need to look at the clutch push rod and see if i can adjust this somewhat but the turn onto the shaft entering the side of the box only turns 1/4 of a turn which i think is not enough to activate the clutch mechanism inside the box - if i have to remove the gearbox i will be devastated

    3. finally smallest issue of the three, but under moderate acceleration i am getting smoke and fire coming from under the exhaust manifold (no exhaust system yet), is this because of my timing or incorrect fuel/air ratio, why is it at times producing fire - too much fuel, too rich in mixture, or is the timing advanced/retarded? Again this is the least of my worries but will need looking at.

So a crappy day to match the weather, but may need to re think this project and where its going if both the engine and gearbox need to come out again.

    1. What colour smoke? Roughly speaking, black is too rich a mixture, blue or gerey is burning oil, probably valve guides or rings - may clear up with a bit of use, white means its getting water into the combustion chambers.

    2. Most likely issue is the shaft going into the bell housing is coupled to the shaft inside the bell housing by a short bit of pipe and two cotter pins. The load on these is high, and they do break - if only one end is broken, it will still transfer some twist, but not enough. These are hardened steel (as is the bit of pipe) and replacing them with ordinary bolts will be a very short lived fix.

    3. Can't really help - I have virtually no experience of watching an engine run with not exhaust!

I have a recent thread in the 101 section about my engine smoking - after about 5km it has all cleared - myguess is oil made its way into the combustion chambers while sitting for a long time and has taken a while to burn off.

Like John said - leave it for a while until you become more mobile and with use hopefully it will burn off and go away.

Most of those stop smoking treatments take a while of driving to work. It is normal for flames to come out of the manifold especially as the revs go up. If when you had the engine out you had the engine laying on it's side it is possible that oil has got up into the cylinders. Have you fitted the new PCV valve , if you have not it could be sucking oil out of the rocker cover. Is the smoke coming out of the exhaust or just off the exhaust , it will take a while to burn any oil from greasy hands or paint overspray off the manifold.
As John said check the pipe link in the X shaft & the adjustments are critical & any wear , a small amount of wear in the linkages makes a big difference at the pressure plate.

That is not a lot of smoke! As suggested, worry about it when it still smokes after 1000miles. Looks like burning oil.

    electrical stuff

Thank you all for your great suggestions, lets hope over time this smoke disappears
101RRS - that gives me hope.
1950Landy - no engine was never on its side and yes the pcv valve is fitted new

    1. found these for the back of the headlights, works a treat but accidentally cut the wrong end of the wires on one of them (silly me), they are 3 prong worked out the + and -, is the third one the high beam wire? tested headlights work with globe

    2. fitted the speedo, not sure if it works but waiting for the cable to connect up, can i fit the end of the cable to a drill and give it a spin to see if speedo turns?

    3. finally managed to knock out the centre 'on' knob and replaced with new barrel and key, dash coming along nicely now

    4. rear view aint the prettiest but it works, missing the spring for the rear of ignition so used this to hold into position for now
