To help with the alloy, you can place some brass on the other side to form a base so to speak, and it’ll just come away afterwards.

    thx chops for the suggestion

p1 - door before paint stripper, grinding wheel and anything else i could find to take the many layers of paint off

p2 - assortment of bits hit with paint stripper while i was at it

p3, p4 after a lot of sanding, grinding, etc to where its at, just need to get some more filler, primer. there are small tiny holes at base of door which will need filling as well.

two wheels suitable for swb according to the code stamped on the wheel however after painting noticed the inside has dome rivets on one and flat on other. this paint was brushed on as a first coat subsequent paint will be sprayed on.

I wouldn't be using that rim on the left because there is far too much corrosion.

I've just used this product on my house and worked well. I intend to use it my projects when the time comes.

    painted rims

painted by hand the centre part of the rim, where the tube sits, was pretty bad but has come up well, have 3 rims done so far, needs a top coat of silver then can have tyres fitted to them. unsure whether to paint them and let them sit and fit tyres much later or have them on the LR so that i can move the car around. will see...

    firewall

some deep bronze green left over paint thrown on the firewall, clearly a diff colour to the bonnet but will use as an undercoat. paint stripped back to metal. needed some paint on top to stop corrosion as it was metal exposed. firewall is another big job for another day

    firewall

doesn't look like much but its progress, sanded back some areas of the firewall that was easy to get at with a grinder. there is a pink coloured glue? i think which is hard stuck on but my new grinding wheel makes easy work to sand back, though wont get into corners. brushed on some paint to protect against the elements until sprayed later...

As Trout said, I think I'd be somewhat worried about using the rim on the right, well both actually. I think both are a little bit to far gone for further use. You can see what looks like an actual hole on the rim/flange where the tyre will sit. Sand blasting would give you a truer guide/look as to how far gone they are.
Would you be able to find another set if you needed to?

    Will replace wheels

Ok hear what people are saying about the wheels, did spend a heap of time cleaning them up. will try and source a complete set of series wheels after i look at what i have that's any good. one rim is good but still have 4 with tyres so until i get the tyre off them wont know for sure.

more sanding and cleaning was in order for the firewall. managed to get some putty for the smaller holes but there is more work to be done on the firewall yet.

p1 firewall needs a lot of work but need to make a start, sanding is the easy bit but getting access to some corner sections can be time consuming

p2 damaged and repaird d/s footwell area, have since removed offending piece of steel insert though like the idea, metal far too thin for me to weld with my arc welder and i just don't have the skill to do nicely. so will look at another piece of steel to reinforce this area hopefully looking as original as possible.

p3 firewall door hanging section made a bit of a mess with the welding so sanded and decided to fill with putty its only a small area, just needs sanding this has progressed past this point just visible in pic5.

p4 p/s footwell area with mostly removed black sound deadening material, then cleaned with mineral turps

p5 final point as is with paint brushed on the top of firewall and above footwells. again black sound deadening material was pasted on to the top of the footwell area which is a pain to remove even with the grinder with a sanding disc. removed air flaps as well.
