Yes that is a 2nd month 1950 & would have come from the UK , the later S1 rims were ROH rims made in AU. My 1950 80" has
10/49 date stamped on the rims , they are also 1/2" narrower than other S1 rims that I have found so you will need to check the width of all the rims that you have & also off set.

There is something NQR about the brakes.
What is the silver tube with flattened ends between the shoes ? Has this been fitted because the adjustment snail has been removed ??
There are also springs that hold the shoes against the backplate that are not usually fitted on a Land Rover.

I guess the brakes have been 'modified' in the past, hopefully they will work when you get it back together.

Fixing an oil leak on a semi-floating axle means access to a 20T press and oxy acetylene. There is an interference fit collar that has to be pressed off the drive shaft. Hopefully you don't find that some clown has welded the collar in place (as I did with mine !).

    Rain again

Began painting the inside of the rims when it began to rain, damn...

Decided to go with the green colour of the body instead of white or silver. I was getting wet in the open garage but still managed to paint all 4 inner rims, so now the wait till fine weather to permit to do the rest.

What tyre that is cheap enough but not too small like the 600x16 and not too big as the 750x16, which is an equivalent size modern tyre example 205 which is somewhere in between. I think the 750s are too big for the series LR even though i have a holden 186. suggestions please. Not sure what size to ask for at the tyre shop which is easily available without the need to have them order it in.

    more paint

4 of my wheels have now been painted green, inner face, inner tube area and just need the outer faces done on a sunny day. Its only been brushed on but hoping to spray the face for a better finish though the brush finish is not bad either.

    4 rims painted

all 4 rims are now painted in green, same colour as paint on the body.

next step is to get some new tyres. will check the paint quality tomorrow to ensure paint finish is as good as i can get it. Hopefully off to the tyre shop next week. I think the LR will be transformed with some new tyres, can't wait. Also removed front bumper which was off a LR 90 so will try to straighten the S1 bumper to fit at some time.

Is it my eyes, or is the rim on the left a different offset to the others??

Shamirj, 6.00 x16 tyres are standard, but horrible on road. My 80 came with useable 7.00 x 16 tyres which were an option on SWB S1s and standard on LWB models. The modern equivalent is 215/85R16LT, which is pretty close to 7.00 x 16 in dimensions at approx. 30inches in diameter. I am quite happy with a set I bought on Gumtree for $120.00 each. They also drop the engine revs on the road compared to the 6.00s. I have seen a few S1s with 205R16 tyres, (approx 28 inches dia.) a very common size. They are a slightly lower profile (80 aspect ratio) and look a bit "modern", but seem to work well enough. At 32 inches in diameter, 7.50 x 16 are just a bit too big for a SWB. Also, check your rims - the correct rims should have 231601 part number stamped on them. Other Land Rover rims will fit, but can have different offsets and rim widths. Not a good idea to fit differents size/offset on the front axle. I hope this is of some help, as tyres are a big cost in a restoration project. 5380

If you want to use 5-1/2" rims without loosing too much clearance between rim and chassis, as you do with 272309 rims, you can use AYG 8038 which have got most the extra width added on the outside. You may have to use half- nuts part no.561254.
211601 and 272309 33mm offset, AYG 8038 44mm. Depending on tyre size you are still going to loose some clearance.

    thank you to all

thanks to all the feedback much appreciated.

yes Larry you are right, i am trying to chase down 2 more 231601s without success so these were the four that came with the vehicle. i may put the tyres on hold for now (D3 in the workshop) and due to diff wheels.

1 i think this is called the drag link, anyway was bent so needed to come out and needs new tie rod ends

2 close up of tie rod ends, do i need 6 total tie rod ends, 3x right hand thread, 3x left ???

3 drag link straightened and painted

4 my series one bumper, needs a bit of work to straighten, took the def 90 one off, just didn't look right

5 something extra for my garage the new 'old' LR parts sign, the other is my camel trophy original which is my pride and joy

My daughter gave me one of those 'old' parts signs for Christmas. Fits in well with the other memorabilia in the garage.
