yes Larry you are right, i am trying to chase down 2 more 231601s without success so these were the four that came with the vehicle. i may put the tyres on hold for now (D3 in the workshop) and due to diff wheels.

1 i think this is called the drag link, anyway was bent so needed to come out and needs new tie rod ends

2 close up of tie rod ends, do i need 6 total tie rod ends, 3x right hand thread, 3x left ???

3 drag link straightened and painted

4 my series one bumper, needs a bit of work to straighten, took the def 90 one off, just didn't look right

5 something extra for my garage the new 'old' LR parts sign, the other is my camel trophy original which is my pride and joy
I may have a couple of those rims. Will have a look in the morning if i remember. They are the same colour too i think.

    Cheers Rod

Yes, you need six. Be very careful - the tie rod ends changed about the start of Series 3. Early ones, such as yours, have an unthreaded bit that the tube clamps on. Later ones are threaded all the way, and the tube is threaded all the way, and clamp on the thread. These are not interchangeable. If they are mismatched it is impossible for them to be clamped securely, and are likely to result in loss of steering.

Unfortunately, some suppliers appear to not know the difference and will supply the later type when you order the earlier type, which is not as easy to find.

Since what is on your vehicle may not be what it had when new, always check what you have before ordering (look inside the tube to make sure the ones on it match).

    Rim update

I have three 'new' old rims coming which are the 231601 so now i will have 4 the same at 5' and one at 5.5'
Happy to use the four as working wheels and the odd one as a spare

I now will have two wheels which are surplus to my needs. Just waiting on the delivery of my wheels this week to clean them up and paint them up to match my existing set.

Cheers to 67hardtop for helping out. thanks mate

Should be able to buy thr Holden red in engine enael in pressure pack cans from any auto shop ( Super Cheap ect) One can should should be enough to paint whole engine bt if you got two would give a good thick coat. The washers you should be able to pick up from any car wreckers , they were used from EH Holden through to Comodore straight 6 motors. Even engine reconditioners would have them laying around or at any Swap Meet you would find them with the guy with Holden bits.

    Question

1 will any series engine mount suit this holden conversion, i see them listed for S2-3 not for S1

2 not sure if this is standard fitment on S1, cable is coming from starter motor positive then onto battery, is this the remains of the push button starter

3 did some last minute painting of the d/s front hub

I see u have the old style warn free wheeling hubs there. Same as my s2a. Was told they were the strongest free wheeling hubs ever made for land rovers. Also its advisable to fit s2 s2a or s3 diesel engine front mounts as they are stronger and resist the twisting torque of the motor better than the round mounts. The diesel mounts are square shaped. rim painting

1 old rim arrived today (thanks again 67hardtop). picked up and began sanding straight away
2 old rim painted in undercoat
    3 2nd rim sanding
4 2nd rim painted in undercoat, have saved 3rd rim for later as its 5.5" wide and not 5"
I now have 4 proper 231601 rims all the same size.

5 got some gal bolts from bunnings for one of the guards to marry the two halves together
6 all bolted up needs some fine tuning but done for today, some reinforcing is needed for the guard that bolts to firewall, prob use some L alum for additional support

Be careful with Galv on the aluminium you will get a reaction that will cause corrosion .
