    Fly Wheel Ring Gear Help

    Gentlemen,
The ring gear on my flywheel is pretty chewed up at TDC and TDC+180. This wear is quite normal, but as the ring gear is not replaceable on a Series 1, and I have never seen a new one offered or sale, I am hoping I can get some advice on how to manage this as part of my restoration.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    regards and thanks
    Jeff

4 cyl stops in 2 positions ,6 cylinder stops in 3 positions. I assume yours is a four cylinder and the 2 wear areas is where the starter motor engages. Can you rotate the flywheel on the crank by one bolt hole so the engine stops at a fresh area of the ring gear?

Why wouldn't the ring gear be replaceable ?

Ring gears where sold by places like Repco a long time ago and there should be someone still selling them.

You might need an older mechanic to help fit a ring gear if you find one.

Ps make sure your starter has been fixed before fitting new ring gear.

Parts manual shows it as replaceable but I did find reference to it not being replaceable on some flywheels.

    If Ring gear is separate.
Replacement (if you can find one) is straightforward but you need to get the old one off without damaging the flywheel. Typically grind down between two teeth and split with a chisel. Heat up the new one and drop it into place but get it right first time because once it's shrunk in place.......
If you can press the old ring gear off the old trick was to turn it round and press it back on, you might have to grind a 'lead in' on each of the teeth though.

If not separate can it be machined off and a replacement fitted ?
Machining tolerance has to be worked out to get a good shrink fit. I've done this on my Isuzu motor which had to have a new flywheel made.

    Next alternative....find another flywheel.

from memory really early engines had the flywheel and ring gear as one piece.

if its a 2 piece it can be replaced, the trick is finding (or adapting) the right one.

As gromit has mentioned, the one piece flywheel can be machined to take a ring gear.

As above. The trick will be finding the ring gear and someone to machine the flywheel. Alternative - seek a "new" flywheel, most likely second hand. I am not sure how interchangeable the flywheels are, but probably someone here can help. It is possible the flywheels off some Rover cars may be usable.

    Jeff,
From my own experience (I have a '53 siamese bore) and your description I would hazard a guess your flywheel is off the original engine fitted to your car and subsequently transferred to the spreadbore block/crank. Some years back I bought a replacement ring gear from John Craddock so you might try them. I've also found Dingocroft helpful. Both in the UK.
I have an original workshop manual and parts catalogue for this model. If you PM me with contact details I'll send you scans of the relevant pages.
    Cheers, Rob S
