Interesting project anyway..... still trying to figure what year she is definitely has the ring pull (missing ring) down to the depression formed in the floor for the ring. At the moment its a wire pull. Can anyone give me the relative measurements of the narrow versus wide springs so i can check. It got the wide transom and the remains of sprung seat mounts. It is somewhere between a 49 and 50 model but there were so many variations within.

It is a fishplate chassis car, and so long as it has not had the fishplates added it can only be a 1948, 1949 or 1950 model.
    • To have the ring pull it should be no later than 1950 model #3884
    • Don't worry about the wide springs they only happened at 1950 model #13530.
Your Car ID plate should be in the engine bay on the LHS of the firewall.

The chassis number is stamped on the flat top of the LHS engine mount, and can be read from leaning over the mudguard.
    • 1948 models are 860001 through 863000
    • 1949 models are 8663001 through 8667920
    • 1950 models are 06100001 through way past your vehicle.
N.B. lots of the fishplate chassis 1950 models were actually built in 1949.

    Hope this helps.

That is a good project you have there.
    Cheers Tony
Tony it can get confusing at times.

One of the problems is that the parts can be so easily swapped and lots of owners wanted the headlights that you could see at night with, so they swapped them for the later grill.
    • The ring pull was replaced with a yellow button in mid 1950 at vehicle 06103885 - still a freewheel unit though.
    • the headlights (and grill panel) changed from the Butler 5" to the Lucas 7" at 1950 vehicle 06111547
    • The narrow front springs with the shackles to the front changed to the wide springs with shackles at the rear in late 1950 vehicle 06113530
The Grenville Motors books even list a vehicle well past the change to 7" headlights as having the lights behind the grill panel.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Are the shakles on forward side of front springs? On my 80" Rear are narrow.
On the 49 front same but foward shackle set up. On my 50 Still has Narrow rear but wide front with rearward shackle setup. The 49 had tractor type head lamps. Also seats are different. 50 has fold down backrest .49 has fixed backrest. Hope this helps I can give you measurement if needed.

Confusing all right. I know the narrow spring one came here in 49 as was puchsed the same year my Great grand father passed away. All documented. They even traded the 48 Ring pull as was getting water in the gear box. No roads here at that time so had to swim creeks etc. The 49 hasn't got over run tranfer set up AFAIK has original running gear other than GMH engine I'll get the chassis number off it and check.

That is how my older one should look. I like the old lamps even if dull.

Yep the same as the one in the pic. If you cant find original 5" Lamps, try KB Classic Parts in QLD, Or Classic and Vintage Bulbs in Adelaide. Barring that, grey Fergy tractor headlamps.

The selectable 2wd/4wd system didn't arrive on Land Rover until about 2500 RHD 1951 vehicles had been built. If the original ID tags are still on the vehicle, the first ones to have the Car Number stamp and the Transfer box instructions incorporated into one plate near the steering wheel were the first ones to NOT HAVE the freewheel unit. All the previous ones had the car number ID tag in the engine bay and the transfer box instructions near the steering wheel. Even if the plates are gone you can still identify the holes.

The thing that confuses lots of people is the yellow button/freewheel units built in the latter half of 1950 model and very early 1951 model.

There are 5 types of Series 1 Bumpers.
    • The 1948 type that is painted and not galvanised, has the crank bracket fully seam welded, no boxing in the back and fits the chassis with the fishplates.
    • The 1949 early 1950 type that is galvanised, has the crank bracket spot welded, no boxing in the back and fits the chassis with the fishplates.
    • The late 1950 through 1953 type, has the crank bracket welded at each end, no boxing in the back and has the top and bottom brackets for attaching to the chassis.
    • The 1954 through early 1956 (86" & 107") type that is the same as the late 1950 type but, has boxing in the back.
    • The late 1956 through 1958 (88" & 109")type same as the 86" & 107" but the bottom attaching bracket is narrower to fit between the spring hanger plates.

Fred was both aware of the issue with Leon and was awaiting something from from NM.

It has been the only issue with over a dozen sold, mostly to Victoria.
