Hi Tony again,
If you can afford it, get one of those automatic darkening welding helmets. I had one like yours for years and kept on getting a FLASH now and then. Arc eyes is a nuisance to say the least. They are marvellous and save getting a flash...just a thought
cheapest is about $85 at Rocket tools Taree, but must be others out there for you..

Yes Tony that is OK,
At TAFE we only had those flip up and flip down types , rather like driving a model T on the free-way. Just give a hint for your Birthday. buy the very best that you can afford and it will last you for many years.

I'm giving serious consideration to doing my chassis with spray packs of epoxy based paint. Works out a bit dearer than a compressor and enamel at about $13 a can but it sticks a lot better too and saves on surface prep. I've got antenna mounts etc sprayed with it that have been in the weather for 10 years and still no sign of rust.

oh ok but how many cans do you think you will need for the chassis.my dad found some suitable paint that was $20 for a litre or $60 for 4litres

There is absolutely no substitute for painting preparation. Using spray can packs will give you a very sore index finger and if you get an itchy nose well ..It will take at least double the amount of cans that you think it will.
antenna mounts are a lot smaller than full size land rover chassis. Your finger sprayed with epoxy enamel and sticking up in the atmosphere would last a long time, but how long would you last? how long would you and your land rover chassis stuck up in the heavens last if coated in one very thin, yes very thin, coat of the favourite epoxy enamel at the local super-cheap? saving on surface prep is one thing but saving on your reputation is another.
Buy a compressor and a spray gun , go to TEC , learn how to use it and go for gold :thumbsup:

I used 2 cans to do an Iron bed for our youngest over Christmas and there was a lot of wastage from that as you are spraying such a small area. So I reckon no more than 5 cans to do a chassis. I used a red oxide primer as well on the bed after stripping it as best I could.

i already have all the spraying gear so ill stick with that plus that is also another good skill to show in my port folio for this project

use POR15 its brush-able, self levelling and gives a professional finish every time.

PPC - POR 15® Rust Preventive Paint

beats using a compressor and spray gun. Just find a paint
