i built it in situ and in the end of the tube between each dumb iron i welded the old original nuts and used bolts new bolts to locate the spring mounting points, in hindsight i should also have fabricated another piece (removable) to support the bumper mounting points as i got the nearside one a little nose down

then there is the repair method such as i'm doing at present on my '65 109

it got too late/dark to photo the finished article, welds linished and front closed up, but the bumper fits really nicely on that side now

    p.s.
apologies if the pictures all need thier links clicking on for you to view them but p/bucket has been dicking about and i don't post on this forum too often so i'm uncertain how to get my pictures to show

Thanks a lot for posting those pics. I am about to do the same job on my vehicle and that really helps.....

here's pictures of both vehicles as i bought them

my 88" bitsa (Zebedee) that i replaced both dumb irons on

and as she more or less looks now complete with disco 200tdi engine, 3.54 diffs, overdrive and parabolic springs, stopping supplied by 11" drums and backplates off a salisbury rear axle fitted on my front axle (90mph more or less on road biased tyres)

and this is Big Ears my 1965 2a 109 as i bought him a year ago, i've been collecting parts in readiness to start the work ever since

he came with a spare bulkhead to rebuild to replace the rotten one which i finished repairing about a month ago and is now ready to be fitted, new ribbed footwells, repaired A posts and assorted other patches let in then media blasted, etch primed, hi build primed and coloured...

i've two outriggers to replace on the right hand side (drivers) and a new fuel tank to fit (might find more rot there) and definitely some repair work to do around the rear crossmember, he'll be getting a 200tdi with 300tdi turbo fitted in place of the 2.25 petrol and 4.3:1 diffs (would prefer 3.9:1 but beggars can't be choosers) along with an overdrive, springs to be changed all round as they're blown (not broken tho)...

i'm hoping to have him ready to put on the road by the end of March but i've still got a few bits to find

    Johnno1969...

you're welcome , i'm not sure which pictures you'll be following but if you are doing the same as i've done on Big Ears (cut and repair) be aware that the lower plate in the dumb iron is a bit of a bugger to remove as theres a hidden (ish) weld under the plate that you can't get at, i used a 9" angle grinder and carefully ground thru the plate until there was none of it left except the weld on the vertical plate underneath it

    Nice work Nitemare!

Why the 300tdi turbo on the 200 tdi?

I am in the process of putting a 200tdi in my 109"

    Cheers Charlie

i'm using the 300tdi turbo as the 109 chassis is deeper than the 88" chassis which means the 109 chassis needs a scallop taking out of it to clear the turbo body if using the 200turbo, the other benefit of using the 300turbo is the exhaust outlet points straight down which will/should make it easier to route/fabricate the downpipe ..

there is a third bonus in that it will make it easier to change the starter motor should it die as the downpipe will be further forward in the chassis...

and the final bonus is that the air intake on the turbo faces towards the bulkhead which will allow me to mount the 200 disco airbox on the passenger footwell making a nice tidy install without the piping going over the engine (series 2a so the heater is inside the cab)....

i still have to work out the pressurised side of the pipework and how i'll mount the intercooler but i have a couple of ideas for when i get to that, one being laying the intercooler on it's side in front of the radiator, i'll move the airpipe stubs onto the side and bottom of the intercooler if i do that (i have a pet tig welder for that), there's no need to worry about airflow over the radiator here (been a very cool year) as the 200tdi runs so cool (i've only switched the fan on this year in my bitsa to ensure it still works)

i've quite a bit of stuff to work out as i go along as i want to make this a nice tidy installation, i've got to convert the wiring to accept the alternator (+ earth dynamo system at the moment), i want to make the throttle just as tidy as my 88" and put the diesel filter in a slightly better/tidier place (nicer routing of fuel pipes)...

you do realise you need to bin the viscous fan ?? i also cut the threads off the waterpump when i binned mine to give me extra space

    p.s.
you might want to find yourself some 3.5mm spacers (4 of) to put over and under your engine rubbers to lift the engine slightly as you "may" find your crank pulley hits the front axle without them (it does/did in my 88) i also skimmed the V's on my 88 crank pulley (i was going to show a picture but p/bucket has hidden it from me )

any other questions/ideas you want clarifying just shout up i can't promise i'll know the answer but i'll do my best i bought my first ever landy two years ago, got four now

    Thanks nite mare
They both look like pretty good trucks. Still years of fun in them I hope you keep us up to date on the 200tdi conversion [I will be watching with interest]
I'm still building mine [about have way...... i think] Hoping to get it on the road early next year. Just trying to make do with what parts i can pick up on the Island. As the freight on larger items can be quite high.
I now have Seven landrovers, one I'm rebuilding, the other six for parts Missed out on another series 2a last week!!! Heard about it after it got dumped off a cliff into the Ocean But then again how many parts does one need
