    Body style identification

    Another question.

Is there any way to identify what body configuration she (Mary) might have been off the show room floor? e.g. hard top, soft top?

Congratulation on your purchase, it looks pretty original and honest.

Running your chassis, gearbox and engine number through calVIN (CalVIN, the Land Rover VIN & Chassis Number Calculator & Decoder) can give you some answers, but can also confuse things in some cases.

How far are you thinking of taking the work? Just roadworthy or more restoration?

Fantastic thanks Sam, I will give it a go.

At this stage I'm just planning to preserve her and make her as original as possible. Once I can properly asses her condition things might change. First priority is to remove the roof and anything not original, give her a clean and fix the water leak and breaks. Then I will be able to drive her and get a feel for what else I'm up against. I'm time "poor" so it will be a slow process

When she makes it home I will upload some more Photos

    Carolyn,
I have a thing against this method....

my 88 2a served with an infantry unit in Vietnam....it was in the ARMY
at that time no females were in infantry units in the ARMY therefore VET is a male, this dispels your theory unless there is a military vehicle exemption to your rule!!

Simon , sorry about the thread jack there!
I think if its... (sorry!) -If MARY is in reasonable condition (which it appears) then $1500 is good, well done.

Nice find and a very good price!

The springs look a little rusty so jacking Mary up and resting her on chassis stands, whilst the axle hangs, will allow you to brush old oil onto them to improve the ride. You will find the ride compared to your Champ and Defender rather harsh if you don't do this,

    Cheers Charlie

PS It is a cheap repair too!

My first Landrover a S2a 88 was named "Noddy" so does that mean i was driving around in a gay landrover?

    Thanks for that Chazza.

The champ is a very interesting vehicles and has the most amazing suspension even compared to today’s cars, she rides much better than George(my defender). She is very complex and difficult to work on, but I have always found the design fascination and very advanced for their time. Not to mention the fact that she can do, and i have, 55mph in reverse. She has been in the family since my dad brought her of the Australian army in 1965, and took my mum to hospital when I was being born. Still registered and part of the family.
