Probably impossible to tell unless you (or someone) can locate some original paperwork.
With practice, the hardtop takes around an hour to fit (in those pre-seatbelt days), and would have been fitted to order, quite possibly by the dealer. Along the same lines, it may have got a hardtop at a later date. It seems to me that the side windows are larger than normal, suggesting a station wagon hardtop, but a station wagon had a side opening one piece door at the back, and deluxe trim, neither of which your's has. This would suggest that it was a later addition, although obviously the windows could have been changed at some time.

I worked on my friend's Champ in the '80's and was most impressed with the ride and comfort; in fact it had the most comfortable ride I have ever experienced in any 4WD! It was also the most impossible machine to work on and I include the Mini in that assessment!
What a joy that yours is still in the family
Cheers Charlie
G'day VK3UTE
If that chassis No is 27300350 it would be the 249 th 1961 diesel 88 fitted with the 2.25 diesel motor, and the photo shows that it has had the roof and sides fitted to bring it to Station Wagon standard and the heater, hand throttle were all accessories available at the time,if it has the lined rear roof it would certainly have been taken from a wagon, it is a nice original vehicle that has been updated and improved to wagon standard by the owner as parts and funds became available, done so often by farmers of that eraI would suggest that you leave it complete as is and treat it to a coat of Landrover Bronze Green so it looks the bees-knees
BTW. The water tap under the bonnett is the original way the heater was activated, it is probably a Bosch but may be a Landie original, these were available as accessories in the 50'&60's before heater/demisters became law
cheers
Thanks Uncleho
I think you are correct with respect to the roof. She has a lined roof in the front half which makes sense with respect to your comments. I am picking her up this weekend and after more discussion with the current owner he is throwing in the original owners and service manuals as well as a collection of new spare parts.
I am suprised she is a 1961 model as i had been told by the owner she is a 64 but I guess that does not make any difference.
Thanks for the usefull information
Simon
PS. How good are these forums, I have never used one before this post and the information and help I have recieved has been fantastic. Thanks to all
G'day VK3UTE
I'm an ex Leyland Aust P/L spares man and still have a couple of master parts books, etc. so it gives me a small advantageand have rebuilt a couple of 2a's over the years

If you want to check the year -- look at the glass manufacturer sign in the bottom corner of the glass. there is a small dot below (above) the main brand name letters - that is the year, obviously max 10 letters so dot on first letter would be 61 - I know it's a bit fishy & It's a long time since I have looked but it seemed to work when I was looking for a 2a back in 1974 just the memory has faded. Also shows in the glass has been replaced.
Anyway I'm sure someone on here will comment on this strange theory.
regards
Steve
