fozzy hits 105ish on the flats and a bit more with a run up or tailwind
Hi All.
Recently fitted a rebuilt 2.25 diesel into "Mary" my SWB 88. Flat out down hill in top gear the GPS tells me she is doing 76km/h
She has 235 85 tyres on the back
I expected her to be slow but is this normal? I was hoping with a rebuilt motor would crack 80km/h
Cheers

Hmmm. I don't know. Mine will do 100km/h with the OD engaged, but I don't try to push it anywhere near that with "normal" top gearing. Mind you, I very rarely exceed 80km/h even with the OD, trying to be kind to the old thing. She's very happy at 44mph... I've noticed that much.
A lot of the reason I am scared to go over 80km/h probably has a lot more to do with the overdrive than anything else. That shrieking makes me think everything else is about to explode. When I am finished assembling the Fairey with new bearings and the extended sump (for anybody who's interested, Hodgo posted some pics of my sump modification in technical chatter a few weeks ago and I will post a thread once it's all running) I will see how it all goes....

Surely Dave would've seen one at 160k+, (Out the back of a herc...without a chute)
When I had my 109" 2a 2.25 petrol, I was amused to see that I had to speed up to reach the 70km'h sign outside most rural towns while on my 8 hour drives from Perth to Albany back in the day...
I was on my P plates, my folks were well chuffed I couldn't actually speed in it...Next vehicle was a V8 ZF Fairlane

Here is a pic of my speedo if it works:
(speedo in MPH, still some accelerator travel left, 33" wheels, speedo accurate, on the flat).
There is a big difference between what is achievable, and what is comfortable and mechanically sympathetic.

Used to hit 105 but cruze on about 90 in mine with 7.5 x 16 Xtra grips. Was kinda noisy
Agreed, but a healthy 2.25D should be able to manage a LOT better than 76 km/h.
FWIW, my 2.25D has survived 12 years, many extended 4x4 trips, and a 15000 km trip across the country. It has developed excessive blowby (and suspected low compression), however I am not unhappy with the longevity.
