I haven't finished the current project - a 1961 Series 2 LWB. But it's close so I have had my eye out for a SWB.
After asking around and looking at a few - I managed to pick-up this little gem:
1960 - Series 2 - SWB petrol
Fairey Over-drive
Dual Petrol Tanks
Free Wheeling Hubs
I purchased it from a farmer in country Victoria. The farmer (Rob) has owned it since he was 18 - and he's 45 now. He was happy that I intend to restore it and not break it up and sell it for parts.
There are some interesting details on the car. I have included some questions with some of the photo's.
Loading for the trip home:
At home - front view:
Drivers side - nice and straight:
Drivers side - what looks like an old filler cap, plated over - about head height:
Rear Drivers side:
Passenger side - some sort of plated cover on the roof line? I'm not sure what it is - there is nothing attached to the back of it inside the car:
Passenger side - what looks like another old filler cap, plated over - about head height:
Split tailgate (with tow bar):
Painted Fairey Decal on the rear of the car:
Selectro Decal on the rear of the car:
Passenger side petrol tank (the petrol cap is located underneath the passenger seat):
Passenger floor - 2 boxes of goodies that I need to investigate:
Drivers floor - 2 boxes of goodies that I need to investigate:
Air Vents - these are covered in a mesh. My 61 does not have this?
Fairey Overdrive.
Adjustable drivers seat (my 61 LWB doesn't have one of these)
Inspection plate over the gearbox (my 61 doesn't have one of these - just a large circular rubber cover):
Petrol tank - left/right switch:
Interior picture (including skirt panels to be re-fitted):
It also came with a truck cab top:
Engine Bay - is this air cleaner correct? My 1961 has the original air cleaner (large black cylinder with oil in the bottom). BUT this car does not have this type of air cleaner, and it does not have the bracket for one either.
I'm not an expert, but I'd suggest the roof is not original and the cab roof was probably what it left the factory with. I believe the Series II station wagons had big square windows in the side (not rounded ones) and the parts book seems to suggest they also had roof windows and a one piece door. The rounded non-opening windows may be Series III?
The air filter is an after-market one, the brackets for the original one probably having been discarded.
The inspection cover for the gearbox is correct.
My parts book does not mention adjustable seats, and none of my SII/IIA's have them, so they may also be an later addition but I'm not certain.
The bug screens in the front vents were fitted to military versions, but not mentioned in the civilian parts book. I do not know if they were an option, or they may also have been fitted by a subsequent owner.
I have no idea what the roof "filler"s are for, although if the roof is indeed a later addition it may have been modified for a specific task on its previous vehicle. I've seen holes for various racks, water tanks (camping and fire fighting).......
Are you going to keep it as a station wagon or go back to the cab?
What a great car! I have the adjustable seat slider in my 1970 S2a. I seem to recall that they were an option but I'm not sure from when. It actually wouldn't surprise me if it was original in yours. I look forward to seeing what you do with it. Very straight looking body. How's the chassis looking?
Cheers

One of my 2a vehicles has the sliding drivers seat. I understood they were an option for the LWB vehicles. I am not finding it easy to get a replacement seat bottom and backrest squab for it.
Both my vehicles have the vent screens. They were added by me. I understood they were an option (they are listed as an option in the owners manual I have). I purchased one set from Sydney (and he told me they came from a Land Rover wrecker somewhere in Western Sydney) and the second set I purchased from Melbourne - they were painted military colours when I got them, they sandblasted clean pretty easily.
* The chassis looks to be in great condition (from what I have seen of it, crawling underneath the car).
* The only rust that I have found is in the drivers foot-well and the door tops.
* It does have a nice straight body.
* The optional drivers seat is a bonus - although I think that it will always be pushed back in the furthest position!
* The mesh vents are silver - not painted by the looks of it
* I intend to leave it will the station-wagon cab on.
* I'm not sure what I am going to do to the ute cab - I already have a LWB Ute Cab, so I might sell it.
My basic intentions are:
* Completely strip the body off
* Fix rust in the foot-well & door tops.
* Replace anything that needs replacing (wheel cylinders, etc)
* Repaint everything.
* Recover/replace seats.
I am thinking about painting it a dark green, with the roof/wheels probably in a white/cream colour..
I have not made any firm decisions on colour yet - now I just have to finish off the current project!
Regards,
The Grey Ghost
PS - I am still thinking of names... Shorty seems to obvious - "Roger" is the current front runner!
Looks like a very nice find,
I would say the truck cab was originally fitted (there is a filler strip behind the seats to fit it) as the hard top looks to be 2A or very early SIII due to the dome head blind rivets for the corner cappings, later SIII's were pop riveted.
The hardtop looks to be off another veh
Also the tailgate is from a LWB series 1 so it has survived well, much better than the SII original.
Still love the SII land rovers, made before land rover went cheap with parts.
All the best in restoration
Hi Looks great i have just got hold of a s11 swb as well it has been shedded 4 40 years but driven periodically and has a modified roof set up and i am sort of after a ute cab i was wondering what one would be worth?
I know where one (roof) was early last year (also in the riverland)
I will make some enqs but I dont know if
a) she will sell (wouldnt budge when I spoke with her "it was dads" but Im sure he didnt want it to rot away!)
b) how much
c) if still there..!
what part of the Riverland are you in?.. I'm at the western end of the Riverland, in the town with the Rock N Roll festival this weekend! (gee that'll be hard for people to work out won't it!)
Will try and find out what I can, (the roof was a S3 type roof "bubble" but had a couple of "mild" dents (which is very common) also one part of sliding rear window had broken glass. )
Cheers
