    Answers to questions

    Hi Roger,
    The paint that I am using is called - White Knight, Rust Guard - "hammered finish". I am using the colour silver. It is available from Bunnings - $15 a spray can.

    I struggled with the question "do I remove all of the pieces of gal on the car, and have them re-galvanised?" If this was a money-no-object restoration I probably would have, but it isn't!

    A lot of the existing gal was painted over (green) - so I am removing any old paint, and rust - returning the look to something similar to gal.. It's cheating - but I am happy with the resulting look.

    Yep back to work today - I need a break from the car! I've done 4-5 hours on it every day for the last week, Although it's enjoyable, some of the cleaning does get tiresome...!

    Hi Juddy,
    The local brake shop charged me $96 to machine all 4 drums.
    Plus $15 for a can of paint (I only painted the exterior).
    I did think about buying all new drums, but the quote I got for 4 drums was $300 plus $50 freight.
    If the brake shop had said: "these drums have already been machined, and you shouldn't do them again" - then I would have gone down the all-new route. There is the added bonus that the car is still original too.

    Paint

    Hi Ozdunc,

    Sorry for the slow reply - I have been interstate (and offline).

    The green paint that I chose to use is Kill Rust - Deep Brunswick Green.

    Not exactly a standard Land Rover colour - but I wanted something that is easily available. I looked at the White Knight green - but it was too bright for my liking.

    our local engineering store has a product that is basically cold gal but looks just like gal! We used to use it to patch up where we cut/scratched/welded gal jobs. You can't tell the difference. I wish i could remember the name of the stuff.... It's not the stuff you get from bunnings, was a little more expensive but so worth it because you can't pick it from real gal dip.

    Update

    Hi All,

    Not much done this week - I have been busy at work and am as crook as a dog.


    Took all 5 wheels down to the sandblaster. Before and after pics:

    That's about all for this week. I have been painting the bonnet + front grill, but will wait for the paint to dry so I can post some before/after pics!

    Juddy - I am not sure what the next project is. I have already been told by SWMBO "There isn't any room left - you need to get rid of one before you go out and buy another"... I tried to explain that having only 2 Landy's is nothing compared to a lot of the members on here, but it fell on deaf ears!

    Hello Grey Ghost,

    Good work on 'Roger'. Your many photos bring back memories of the long hard road restoring our ex-mil S2A. I started on the tools in Dads' workshop when I was eight. Dad and I worked together over five years, long days and long nights, before the proud moment of achievment arrived when it was registered and immediately pressed into service for the Anzac Day Parade.
    Like your work, ours too was meticulous with great attention to detail. Dad instilled in me the work ethic of 'Do it once by doing it properly, and you won't have to re-do it'.

    Update

    Hi All,

    Slow progress of late... But still some progress!

    The bonnet now has some paint on it.. Here it is sand blasted:

    I have pulled apart the tailgate - and only then did I notice that one of the tail-gate arms was cracked, and from the looks of it has already been repaired:


    I don't have a welder, or have a mate with a welder - so I thought that I might as well replace both tailgate arms... A quick email to pfillery and a very nice set arrive in the mail a little while later...


    I go to fit the new items, and discover that the profile is completely different. The top one is the *new* one, and the bottom one is the existing one:


    This is a little strange because the new arms are identical to the ones on my 61 LWB... So these ones off my 60 SWB are different... Then again - we are talking about Land Rover!

    So I took the damaged arm off to a local mechanic who repaired it for free. I will sand, clean & paint it:


    To the weather gods - please bring some nice weather to Melbourne so that I can enjoy working on Roger!
