I have a few stray wires.
The colour on the fabric covering is LONG gone.
The pastic colours are:
Purple (power supply, I suspect)
Greeen with red tracer, green with white tracer. Does anyone have any idea what circuits they are for?

PO has wired in his own indicator circuit!
I can track down what's there with my needle probe & a hot wire but when there are dead wires doing nothing it's hard to work out what's going on!
Purple is the interior light- also NOT there.

OK I'm familar with the theory:
The horn gets a fused hot wire then t'other side gets earthed when the button is pushed down.
I can see the spring loaded horn button and the slip ring on the column with its contact but I'm damned if I can see the wire from the horn???
On VW's the connection was made via a carbon brush on the side of the column and old Jags sent a wire up the guts of the steering column.

There are two wires to the horn. One is typically green and has the power from the fuse box to the horn and the other is often green with a red stripe that goes up through the loom, into the back of the dash, out through a hole in the dash surround towards the steering wheel and sits just under the steering column. The copper (?) ring at the top of the steering column that the wiper connects to has a wire on the bottom of it that travels down the outside of the column to the wire that comes out of the dash area.
The wiper has a wire that goes up through the steering wheel centre to the horn button centre.
As you have surmised, the steering column is connected to earth. The outer of the horn button will, therefore, connect to earth. When you press the button, the outer shorts to the centre pin and makes the circuit.

Errrrrm, are you typing "wiper" but mean "horn"?
Yes, I need the connecting wire that goes from the (insulated?) slip ring on the column to the wire from the dash. I DO have a spare green with red tracer wire behind the dash with a female bullet connector.
Where does it "pop out" from the column? If mine is missing, I'm guessing it will be impossible to re-connect!
There is a collar attached to the bottom of the steering wheel. Inside is a wiper that makes the connection to the copper band on the top of the steering column.
It is possible that the collar (and it's wire and wiper) are missing from your wheel.
Look at the attached picture.
Item 60 is the insulated collar at the top of the column.
Item 59 is the collar that attaches to your wheel and has a wire that goes to the horn button through a hole in the centre of the wheel - and inside it is the wiper that makes permanent contact with item 60 as you rotate the wheel.
This picture should be a bit clearer.
In this picture Item 61 is the insulated collar at the top of the column.

The "wiper" is the brass tongue that wipes the slip ring!
