    That's a Holden motor isn't it?
Or is it a Landy six that's been painted red?

You seem to have a good set up there.

It cylinder engine, got two of them and two gear boxes with the sale. I believe it a LR original 2.25, don't know what colour the engine should be painted, have seen picture on the web of them blue, dark brown and red so I don't really know. A previous post said that the engine is from 1961 just need to find the chassis number next.

I'm doing the project at work, I buy, sell, hire and repair forklifts so its ideal to restore a Landy, also have 9 engineers that are eager to help when they can, have resisted this as its the lads project I'm just guiding him!

Just been having a look at this thread, great to see another 2A coming back to life.

Out of interest, your engine is a military one, and it was originally fitted to a 1969 2a radio truck. (A FFT as they were called).

This vehicle had an army registration number of 175 258, and was auctioned in September 1982. Details are courtesy of REMLR.

Who knows how this engine got into your vehicle, it was probably removed from the army 2A and put into yours, but anything is possible!

The twin crank pulley and 8 bladed fan are part of the military spec, and it would have originally have had a Lucas generator as well as a big 24 volt radio battery generator fitted instead of the current alternator.

A good bit of history, and part of your vehicles story.

    Cheers,

    Mike.

Thank you very much for that information, can't wait to tell my Son when I get home.

I have a spare engine as well, in two minds what to do! The current engine and box don't turn over, we suspect it has dropped a valve. The spare engine does turn over. Both will need to be stripped and checked anyway, would I bet better using the spare engine and trying to keep everything original or should I use the army engine.

I'll post a picture of the spare engine.

No worries, I thought your son might be interested.

You never know what you can find out about a 45 year old vehicle.

Maybe your spare engine was the original and the military one replaced it?

Do you still have contact with the original owner? Someone did an engine swap at some stage obviously.

Anyway, looking good - will be a great vehicle and a fun journey.

    Cheers,

    Mike.

Typically, engines don't need to wear hi-vis gear

Okay, your second engine is also ex military.

    It was originally fitted to a 1967 2A workshop vehicle, registered 114 - 228.

This vehicle was originally an automotive repair unit, but it looks like it has also donated its engine to your vehicle. (thanks again to REMLR)

So, at this stage, you don't have your original engine, but you do have 2 ex military engines. Again, the second one has the twin pulley and 8 blade fan. It may also have a bracket on the distributor side of the head to hold the coil, which I've only ever seen on military engines.

Hopefully, you can make one good one out of the 2, and get one of them back on the road.

    Cheers,

    Mike.

    Thank you Mike,

What is the benefit to fitting an ex-military engine over a standard one, were they built specifically for reliability or performance?

As far as I know, the military engines are the same as the civi ones, they were fitted with the twin belts and big fan as an option by the army for heavy duty cooling.

When the 2A s and all of their spares began to be sold off in the 80s, lots of people with civilian Land Rovers suddenly found that they could replace their tired engines, diffs etc with low mileage military parts.

Of course the army maintained their vehicles to a high standard, and ran a comprehensive overhaul program for all of their engines, gearboxes etc.

I once met a bloke who ran a engine reconditioning business that had a contract with defence, and he said that he would receive engines for overhaul that had done very little work, they would come with every single part needed for a complete overhaul from Pistons down to gaskets. He said he had a huge collection of unused parts after a few years!

There were some businesses that bought lots of ex army parts at disposal auctions, and made good money selling these bits to people like us.

So it looks like the previous owner of your 2A picked up a couple of engines that were ex military, probably from vehicles that were parted out.

So I guess that if I was after a good engine for my 2A in the 80s or 90s, I would go for a low mileage military one, instead of paying a fortune to overhaul my old one or fit a Holden red motor.

    That's one possibility anyway!

    Cheers,

    Mike.
