    Oil leak from handbrake drum

Any common causes before I rip the thing apart? Is it likely to be the seal at the back of the drum or does it mean the rear main has gone?

    Thanks

The seal in the back of the transfer case. Need to replace that and also check the sealing surface on the drive member and either replace or speedi sleeve it if it needs it.

Drop the tailshaft, put the handbrake on and remove the large nut in the middle while you have the handbrake to stop it from turning, remove the handbrake drum and backing plate, remove the drive member, change seal, clean it all up and replace shoes if they are too oily and then put it all back together. You can use a felt seal same as the axle drive members in there as well.

    Cheers,

While you are at it, check the preload on the output bearing (set by shims under speedo drive housing) to make sure that the problem is not the shaft wobbling (unlikely - just before undoing the big nut, with the handbrake off, ensure that there is absolutely no sideways movement on the drum).

And remember to drain the transfer case oil before starting the job, otherwise you will have a considerable mess.

Thanks guys, the gearbox is going back in a rebuild and hasn't been used for a few years so won't be able to put the handbrake on but I'll figure that out!

Dropped the oil this morning so will give it ago later - TimJ do you mean the bit the tail shaft connects to when you say drive member?

    Thanks

Thanks Colin, guess I'll need to add some whitworth to my collection (they weren't tight so the nutfeckers worked.

In other news is oil on the shaft good or bad (I'm hoping good otherwise I assume it's transfer box off)?

You will find that there are quite a few Whitworth/BSF sizes on all Series Landrovers. Fortunately, one of the most common ones, 1/4"BSF, is close enough to either 7/16"AF or 11mm. But some other sizes are essential.

In my experience, markets, OP shops, garage sales etc are a prolific source of very cheap Whitworth/BSF spanners, often very good quality.

So for clarification as noob then, the output shaft seal is this one located in the speedo pinion housing and can be pressed out and replaced?
