Thread: 1958 SII colour

Back on the paint theme again - I've grown accustomed to the DBG now, in fact I quite like it... that's the colour it will be.

I'd like to do the wheels and cabin roof in Limestone (Dulux D38505/RTC4044A), I think these colours go well together, but was this done in 1958-59? or were they strictly painted in body colour only?

Would seeing my ex-mil 2a on the weekend have anything to do with your choice? Mine is a very shiny DBG

Well, after my 15 yr old went for a short drive with Harry in the 101 a couple of weeks ago, all he is looking for is a similar vehicle!! That may not be a big statement, but seeing that we have just driven 2800 kms from the Gold Coast to Stanley in Tassie, it speaks volumes re his new '101 affliction'!
I did happen to see a 2a 101 in Port Franklin, he was very upset that I wouldn't back track for him to take a look!

I don't believe you got an answer to your question on the Limestone paint. My understanding is that this became largely standard in this country from around 1967 and possibly a little earlier in the UK. I doubt that it would have been a standard colour in the late 1950's. All of the early 2's and 2A's that were running around my home district came new with green or grey wheels depending on the wheelbase.

It occurs to me that I have some early 2a wheels round here, with the original paint - they are swb wheels, and they are all green. One is my spare trailer wheel.

Thats about what I thought, and the images I have been trolling through on the internet seem to confirm it. DBG is the correct colour for these parts.

However I think I'll go with the limestone/sandstone colour anyway, I think it looks good. There is the question of devaluing the vehicle, but if ever I sell it (not likely) to an aficionado it can always be corrected at the time; it's only paint after all...
