That is all good when the differential is on the bench, but when it is still bolted in the housing, how do you determine the orientation of the cross shaft and ensure that you are pressing on the axle?

Thanks again everyone. I followed Aaron's advice and just removed the stub axle and the shaft came out once the pressure was off it. Now to buy some parts and get it back together again
When you buy your new half shaft, remember that they come in different qualities. The cheaper ones don't last very long at all. Did you break the long one or the short one?

When I bought it the long one was broken which I replaced. This time my 16 year old daughter broke the short one. Driving up a hill in the paddock, changing from 1st to 2nd. By the time she double clutched she was going backwards and in her panic revved the Holden red motor up to about 5,000RPM and dumped the clutch - huge bang = broken short shaft, dammaged drive flange and stub axle!
