That is all good when the differential is on the bench, but when it is still bolted in the housing, how do you determine the orientation of the cross shaft and ensure that you are pressing on the axle?

I know it can be done , just worning you have to be sure the drift is beside the pin.

A flattened copper tube isn't going to damage the cross pin. Feeling it past the pin would be dead easy. I've tapped out a broken axle on an old Holden using heavy fencing wire guided through a length of small bore pipe. The broken axle isn't welded in, one hopes.

Good point. It doesn't have a CIG locker fitted, does it?

Thanks again everyone. I followed Aaron's advice and just removed the stub axle and the shaft came out once the pressure was off it. Now to buy some parts and get it back together again

When you buy your new half shaft, remember that they come in different qualities. The cheaper ones don't last very long at all. Did you break the long one or the short one?

When I bought it the long one was broken which I replaced. This time my 16 year old daughter broke the short one. Driving up a hill in the paddock, changing from 1st to 2nd. By the time she double clutched she was going backwards and in her panic revved the Holden red motor up to about 5,000RPM and dumped the clutch - huge bang = broken short shaft, dammaged drive flange and stub axle!
