The SIIB have synchromesh on 3rd and 4th gear the SIII have synchromesh on all forward gears, the helical transfer box is the same.
He's not going to get a higher road speed from a helical transfer box even with 36" tyres.
He's also not going to be able to find an overdrive for the helical transfer box.
He wanted to build a 1 Ton replica from a series III, and that's what I have told him, not what are the disadvantages because they are not the questions he asked!
You won't be able to attain low revs on the highway and a very low ratio in low range. Those two items are mutually exclusive with the 1 Ton box.
You can have low revs to attain highway speeds by using a regular series transfer box and 9.00 16 tyres, but you lose the low ratios with the big tyres.
No one currently (or has ever) made an overdrive for the helical transfer box.
You should forget about making a 1 Ton replica and just build a modified SIII Stage 1 using something like a R380/LT230 transmission where you have an overdrive 5th gear and a low transfer ratio lower than the all helical transfer box. With the LT 230 you have a range of easily obtainable transfer hi ratios from 1.41:1 to 1.003:1 which is too high for your needs
By using 4.7:1 series diffs in place of the 3.54:1 Stage 1 diffs you will get the desired very low ratio in low range.
It still wont be a proper copy without the front salisbury.
How much to buy and import a complete vehical from the old country?
If you import a proper one can run 9.00 x 16 tyres legally without engineering, and you'll end up with a highly sought after S3.
The problem is finding one in a condition worthy of being imported. These vehicles were mostly used by utilities or vehicle recovery companies so have had a hard life and coupled with the effect of salt on the road most will need a new chassis before you pack it up and send it to Aus. Don't even try to bring a vehicle with a rusty chassis into Australia, AQIS will never let it through.

Hi All
I have a vehicle here that has a one ton chassis with the small rear crossmember and stage one bonnet motor and gearbox. Until I find out how to run the chassis and body numbers i'm reluctant to say its a stage one.
It is a 109 ute cab and has a fixed gearbox crossmember for the v8 and rangie box. When i got in the floor looked nothing like a normal series  and then it hit me that's why it has the stage one bonnet as the rangie box makes it so much longer thans the 2a with a v8:D
Anyway when i get it running will see if it has the right diff ratio's or not
Regards Mark
What about just importing the plates off uk 1 ton that is rusted out instead of the whole vehicle. and Building it with mostly local bits?
Keep this discussion going lots of good questions and answers i havent thought of thanks heaps :)
I should also mention that I would also like the ability to run a pto setup which is easier with a series chassis. Tansfer. am happy to put up with the gearing that the Series Transfer restrics me to if need be. may still have 2 old over drives to build one goody out of :) maybe........
how do guys go, that build old GTHO replicas and the like with machinery/engineering and rego. Is it easily pasted because the manufacturer has made it in the past and there using standard parts?
