Sounds like rings/compression. Blue smoke is engine oil, isn't it?
Could just need a de-glaze, if she hasn't done any hard work for a while.
Just bought a SWB for farm use.
Been looking for a diesel for a while.
What is strange is that it has County stickers on the doors and trim but has never had a heater.
Seems ok rust wise, few dints, no brakes but it is a PIG to start.
Need to wind it over for ages before it will fire.
Will re start after about 20 cranks once warm.
Once running blows blue smoke.
When running there is no excessive knocking noises (less noise than my 300tdi at idle)
Fuel and filter are ok.
There is power to all glow plugs.
Are there any fuel or oil additives or some kind of flush that may help.
I am guessing it needs rings (without doing a compression test)
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers, Pat.

Sounds like compression is low. However could also be injectors.
However in winter where you are it will take about 1.5 mins of glow to get it to start. Does it crank over rapidly? Cranking speed makes a huge difference.
Mine will start straight away once at full operating temp.
Is there much crankcase blowby?
This is worth a try. When my starter died, I drove the IIA around for a while by roll starting it and leaving to idle when I couldn't stop on a hill. It started burning a bit of oil, but working the engine hard once I had fixed the starter sorted that. It wasn't any harder to start though... so the problem may be more serious.
I have used the oil flush and the fuel additive from this business and I have been most impressed with it; check out the testimonials (mine is on there)

any photos?
no heater???? thought it was standard on SIII's.....
Sorry no picks tried this morning camera is dead.
RE Heater no mounting or inlet holes in fire wall or OS guard.
Also it has the strengthened front and rear axle housings. This is the 4th series III I have owned (2x109" & 1x88') and none have had this feature.
Cheers Pat
