    Timing?

    Yes I have one of those engines (a 186) but I'll ask for help here anyway as it seem many have had experience on these engines.

    I'm a poor student and am loving owning a Landy and fixing it when it breaks (which seems reasonably regularly) but it seems I can never get ahead and start to actually care for the engine and vehicle. For example I only just found enough money to finally do an oil change the other day one month after buying it. Anyway I'm not complaining just excusing myself for not purchasing a workshop manual yet (I have one for the Landy but they don't cover the 186 for some reason).

    So since I don't have a manual I'm pretty useless. I seem to be able to follow instructions pretty well but I don't have any guidance and can't afford to see a mechanic.

    My problem: the engine has developed a clunking sound (after Castle Hill) and was overheating. I changed the oil and coolant but the clunking sound didn't go away (not that I thought it would). It seemed to get rid of the overheating problem though. My diagnosis would be timing but I could be completely wrong and time and money are both limited.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

    get a recording of the sound and post it up, using such accurate words as a clunk, a rattle or a squeek when talking landrover is about as helpful as saying, "have you seen my mate? hes a human"

    when and how does it clunk, where does it sound like its coming from?

    static timing for the 186 is between 8 + 14 degrees btdc

    I'll try and get a recording (I was sure you would understand exactly what I meant by clunk but anyway). It will make a rattly sound sometimes when idling whch increases to a clunking sound on takeoff but once its moving it'll settle down to the 'normal' landy noses.

    sounds like low oil pressure.


    you might get away with adding an oil addative for older engines, what grade oil did you put in?

    I think my problem may actually be the exhaust system. One of the brackets is broken but there's so many rattles etc. it could have been both. I fixed the PCV seal it wasn't sealed properly and now my oil pressure is at approx 200kpa and the engine is sounding great again...(did I just imagine it??)

    What should the oil pressure be at?

    about 35-40psi, or 240-280ish kpa at idle and upto 60psi or 420ish kpa at full revs

    on edit...

    wrong, thats generic diesel engine pressures

    15-25 at idle and 40-45 at full rpms.

    Definately my exhaust. It was making the bad rattle, well at least a very bad rattle if it was coming from the engine. I think the engine was making a slight rattle as well but seems alright now. And my ol pressure seems about right.

    yeah I am...I need one for the 186 and I'm after a Haymes or Gregorys for the Landy (I have the one on cd from Dave's shop)
