The 4 Wheel Drives bearings are unbranded and just have a part number etched on the inner & outer race. They used to supply MNR bearings which are Indian made.
A while ago I decided to replace the MNR bearings on my Defender with Timken. The Timken bearings were about $25 each and the MNR bearings had some strange marks on the bearing surface despite having only covered approximately 10,000Klms. When they were drifted out (using a large pin-punch) the outer race was damaged by the punch ! I have never seen this with any 'big-brand' bearing, hence my concern at using no-name bearings.

Looks like I am stuck with the no-name bearings in the short term at least.

    Thanks, Colin
If you swap to later model or stage1 hubs and stubs you can use defender bearings.

    Thanks Isuzurover,

It crossed my mind that it may be an option but I wasn't sure if they were a straight swap.

Yes they are. I have a Stage 1 front axle in my IIA and stage 1 hubs and stubs in the rear.

    Hopefully some one can help.

We have just had a wheel bearing failure in the rear of our 83 stage 1.

Is the bearing part number STC4382?

I thought it was RTC3429 from my first search, but that seems to have been superceeded by the STC one.

    cheers

AFAIK they take exactly the same bearings as RRCs and 90s/110s.
