G'day Jimbob
Aah! a 6 pot, just a little harder to get a smooth crank balance (3 brg crank) than with a 4 pot, after many years of driving earlier designed motors one tends to get the feel of what revs each individual motor runs at, and one tends to drive it at the sweetest/smoothest spot, but it takes years of experience and they all differ in some way, just ask any truckey, once you get the "feel" of a motor it will last quite a lot longer without trouble.
But, in my younger days I could destroy a good Holden motor in a few hoursby overrevving it, sounds like that could be what has happened to yours, overrevved and either dropped a valve or snapped a bigend bolt.
when you get it home drop the sump first, and check all the big-end bolts with a socket spanner then try the mains before you lift the head then if the problem is the bottom end you do not have to desturb the top.
cheers

and if it still has it's original motor in it, it will have been USED
