Early S3 chassis type, 4 piece or c-section?

Hi, Im restoring a 1972 109 s/w that I've owned or known about since she was a 12 yr old. Its a NZ built CKD #93300070A (is this nz's oldest S3?) and currenly has a 4 piece edge welded chassis of 2/2a type but with the S3 typical brackets etc. I've been told its wrong, and "ALL S3's have the later type 2 piece c-section rails". I have a beaut c-section chassis to use, but dont want to destroy any of its early or CKD history. (This was built at a time when the S2 1965 skippys were being assembled (as1971's!))
Anyone out there with some difinite info, or another early 109 CKD owner who can advise whats under theirs?
    Appreciate any feedback, thanks

If the chassis no. matches the data plate and your licence papers, it probably is the right chassis - if so keep it

I don't have anything definite, but I am pretty certain that the changeover was not coincident with the change from 2a to 3. In fact, judging from the ways that Rover handled other changes (e.g. continuation of 107 wagon and 2l engine after the S2 was introduced, continuation of the S3 88 after the 110 was introduced) I would think it more likely than not.

If the number on the chassis is correct, it is almost certainly the right chassis.

Thanks guys. The chassis having a number would make it too easy. Unfortunately S3 CKD's did not have a number stamped on the frame, (as far as I am told), and I certainly cant locate one. They relied on the build tag only, for rego purposes.

All the SIII 88 were 4 plates and as John said the change over wasnt exactly at the change over. They would likely use up any remaining SIIa chassis.

Remember that the chassis number is stamped on vehicle assembly, not when the chassis is welded together.

I have a SIIb with a SIII clamshell chassis.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I would like to hear from other early S3 109 s/w owners.
One did turn up in town yesterday 93300493, which also has a 4 piece chassis, so I'm getting confident ours still has her original one.......even though 'everyone' says they were only on c-section type. Yes, I'm aware all 88" were 4 piece.
    More comments appreciated, thanks

    Hi All

I have a series three hardtop (which one ) with the 2a type chassis and dandlandyman says it is comman for the early series three to have them. I cant remember what he said exactly but that was the gist of it. I think mine is my pto winch one (the snigrig )

    Hi,
I am from the uk and am restoring a 109 station wagon. It was first registered 1/1/1972. It has the corner welded chassis.

    109

    G,day,

I have a 1972 series 3 109 station wagon. It has change over parts from the IIA (things like - window lock buttons *push/twist type*) So having the older chassis is more than likely.

It's the unusual things that make it a true landy.
